' REMOVAL OF BAN
(Rec. 9.40) ■ OTTAWA, July 21. The “Canadian Press” says: a House of Commons Committee wno have been studying the defence of Canada regulations have decided, at a secret meeting, to recommend Utting the ban on the Canadian Communist Party. The Party has been outlawed since 1940. The action of the committee is reported to nave been taken in spite of the objection of the chairman of the committee, Hon. Mr J. E. Michaud, the Canadian Minister of Fisheries. Mr Michaud has resigned from the chairmanship. The committee has selected Mr H. B. McKinnon (Ontario), a Liberal, to succeed Mr Michaud. Mr McKinnon is to present a report from the committee to the blouse or Commons on Thursday. This will hiunch a debate in reference to Communism in the House. SYDNEY, July 22. The' ban on the Australian Communist Party will be removed by the Federal Government, immediately the negotiations with the Soviet Government for the exchange of envoys is completed. The “Telegraph" says that this was reported in high official. quarters in answer to an inquiry whether..the Government intended to grant the request of the trade- union conference six weeks ago, to lift the ban. The majority of the Federal Cabinet is said to be satisfied that the Communist Party’s early opposition to the- war has changed completely, and that most Australian Communists are wholly behind the war effort.
