CATTLE AND SHEEP FIRM. (Special to “Argus.”) CHRISTCHURCH. July 22. The following review of to-day’s livestock sales at Addington is supplied by H. Matson and Co.: — Fat cattle: More rigid grading of cows was responsible • for a smaller entry, but there was a marked i®provement in quality. The entry totalled 426 head. Values more than covered last week’s drop ox 20s a head. The market was firm throughout. and finished exceptionally well. Best beef ranged at up to 4us per 100 lb, good beef 40s to 435. medium 37s 6d to 39s 6d. ordinary beer 375, inferior 32s 6d. Values were: Extra prime heavy steers, £22 17s 6d, prime heavy steers, £l7 5s to £lB ips. prime medium steers £l5 15s to £l7. ordinary steers £l2 5s to £l4 10s light steers £l2, extra prime heifers to £l6 17s 6d, prime heifers £lO 15s to £l3. medium heifers £8 to £lO 10s, light heifers £7 10s, extra prime cows £l4 7s 6d, prime cows £8 10s to £ll, medium cows £6 10s to £7 15s, light cows £6 ss. Store sheep: There was an entry of 1495, with a large attendance of buyers and keen competition for all classes. Breding ewes were in strong demand. Prices showed a considerable rise for quality offerings. Four-year-olds made up to 27s 3d to 29s Id. Medium lots ranged from 20s 6d to 225, inferior quality from 10s 4d to 15s wethers, best un to 28s. medium qualities. 17s to 24s 3d. The general demand for store sheep was still unsatisfied at the end of the sale.

Fat lambs: There was a small •yarding. The quality was medium. Prices were on a par with the previous market being up to 355, medium 27s 4d to 30s lOd. and others 20s 6d to 265. Fat pigs: There was a large entry in the porker section. Values eased slightlv at the close of the sale, particularly for heavy weights. Choppers were in heavy supply and the market easier. There was a large penning of baconers. The sale was firm throughout. Porkers. 36s 6<-i to £3 19s 6d, average per lb 84d to 9 : i‘d, baconers £3 12s 6d to £4 19s 6d, average per lb, 7d to 81d. Store nigs: The entry snowed an increase. A large attendance of buyers made prices on a par with the previous market. Values were: Wearners 10s to 265. slips 24s to 28s 6d. stores 38s to 45s lid. Store cattle: There was a larger entry than usual, due to rigid grading in the beef section. The sale was an improved one and was firm for all classes. Two 1 trucks of black polls made £l2 Is to £l3 6s. Cows mads up to £6 11s for a pen of Shorthorn Hereford Cross. A pen of rising two-year-old steers made £7 18s 6d. Any cows suitable for fattening sold freely from £4 upwards. Fat sheep: The entry was on a par with last week. Last week’s drop of 2s for ewes was recovered. Wethers were in keen demand and. prices were on a par with last week. Prices were: Extra prime heavy wethers 49s 7d. extra heavy wethers 40s to 445, prime medium wethers 35s to 39s’ light wethers 275. extra good ’ewes 34s 7d, prime ewes 27s to 31s, prime medium ewes 24s to 265. light ewes 17s to 225. Vealers: The entry was a .>haa~ larger. A good sound sale was maintained for all classes. Quality was very ordinary, with verv few good quality calves in the market, /ames were: Large runners £4 13s 6d to £8 8s 6d. others £3 16s td £4 8s Go, good vealers £4 3s 6d to £6 Is. medium vealers £3 Is to £3 18s' 6d, large calves £2 15s to £3 6s. medium calves 39s to 525, small calves 8s to o6s. The dairy entry was a large one of 95 head. The quality was indifferent. The sale opened with values on a par with the previous week. Best second and third calvers realized £ll to £l4. good £8 ills to £lO 10s, average sorts £6 to £7 las. low conditioned and inferior £3 to £5 ss, best heifers made from £l3 and £!(.- pood £lO to £l2 10s, medium £7 10s to £9 10s small and backward £5 5s to £7 ss.
