RUNANGA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). Friends and relatives of Mrs H. Connolly, Runanga, gathered at her residence on the occasion of her 80th. birthday on the 24th. inst., to tender their congratulations, and to wish her many happy returns. Mrs Connolly, who lived in Brunnerton during her early, life, has now been a resident of Runanga for many years. During the afternoon a large number of lady friends assembled. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and a very happy time was spent by all present. Mrs Connolly was warmly congratulated and she was the recipient of a number of useful presents from local residents, and. also from friends in other parts of the Dominion. A number of telegrams of were also received from friends who were unable to be present, also a cablegram from Australia, conveying good wishes from Mrs Connolly’s daughter and son-in-law, Mr and Mrs A. Honey, and from her three sons, Peter, Thomas and Edward. Among those present were Hon. M. Connolly, M.L.C., and Mrs Connolly .of Dunedin. A remarkable coincidence occurred during the celebration, there being among the many letters, received on that day, one containing the information that. she was the winner of a cash prize in an art union. The lucky ticket was marked “Birthday,” and the result arrived on her birthday. After the Anzac ceremony at the Memorial Hall, Mr. Spiers placed a bus at the disposal of the R.S.A., and members visited the Kumara Cemetery and placed poppies on the departed soldiers’ graves.
