SALVATION ARMY

The annual self demal appeal of the Salvation Army is now be:ng made throughout New Zealand, ana in a little brochure addressed to friends of the organisation, Commissioner J. Evan Smith gives some reasons why the public should respond to the Army’s call for funds to carry on its work. He states that Corps and spiritual activities are being carried on in four hundred centres of work, a vast network of contacts being maintained with many thousands of homes by pastoral visitation, which is particularly helpful in these days of anxiety and perplexity, Included in thirtv-five institutions in the Dominion are a variety of “Good Samaritan Inns.” Seven children’s homes fill a great need. Industrial homes for women, and maternity hospitals number ten. There are five eventide homes providing suitably for the evening-time of aged men and women. A hostel for young women is greatly appreciated. For needy men there are three industrial homes and three shelters. A men’s hostel is an appreciated provider of reasonably priced amenities. Four Samaritan centres render good service to those in tragic and at times unexpected need. Two island inebriate colonies provide the atmosphere for restoration. The work accomplished (the many lives helpfully influenced and characters moulded and soundly built) has been made possible by the continued and generous support of our many interested friends throughout the Dominion. Twenty-two packing cases containing 5,660 garments, mostly new, have been dispatched from headquarters in Wellington for air raid victims in Britain, and, six more cases are ready packed awaiting shipment. These have been made or provided by comrades of the Army, most of whom are members of the Home League. Among the latest many beautiful .articles just to hand are a dozen cot covers made by a comrade who has been an invalid for fortyone years, and who did the machining with one foot, there being associated with her an elderly lady of seventy-five years of age.
