GREY SWIMMING CLUB

The following is the annual report of the Grevmouih Amateur Swimming Club for the 1940-41 season, to be presented to the annual meeting to-morrow at 7.30 p.m.-—The season, on the whole, was quite a satisfactory one and there was more activity than in the previous two seasons. A slight increase in membership was recorded, due pa.’tly to the fact that the Cobden and Marist Clubs haye temporarilv suspended activities, anu their active members cor.spquent.lv joined up with this club, the Ib.a. of the financial membership at the end of the season was 27. The dun held one carnival during the season. Unfortunately wet weather caused it to be postponed twice ana consequently it was not. as successful as it would otherwise have been. 3he profit resulting was donated to the funds. The challenge entered by this club against the Wcstoort Club Lor the John Burns Cup resulted in a close and exciting contest won by .this club by one point. The club was represented by several members at the annual West Coast championships held in Hokitika, and they obtained their full share of victories. To wind up the season’s activities, an informal social evening was held. Although the attendance of membeis was rather disappointing, a most enjoyable evening resulted. The years operations resulted in a substantial loss, so that economy will have to be exercised in the coming season. It was with sincere sorrow that members learnt of the sudden death of Mr Peter Daly, one of the club’s most promising younger swimmers. His passing is a great loss to swimming. In conclusion your committee wishes to thank the press and all others who assisted the club during the season, in particular- the baths caretaker, Mr W. Davies, and Messrs W. McClymont and F. Baillie, who lent their cars for the trip to W’estport. The lighting restrictions and the loss of senior male members wmo go into the armed forces will tend to make the coming season a difficult one. The enthusiasm and active support of every member* is therefore required so that the sport of swimming can be maintained in Greymouth.
