KUMARA NOTES

I Our own correspondent] The State School Committee met on Monday evening. Present: Messrs D. A.’ McLean (Chairman), R. J. Little, ~J. Reedy and H. Hamer (Hon. Secretary, and Mr L. J. Thwaites (Headmaster). An apology was received from Mr Chant. Ihe Headmaster submitted his first report for the year. Ten pupils had been withdrawn from the school since December, and two were admitted, leaving a roll number of 59. Miss Phyllis Thwaites had been appointed supernumary. Mr Hornby (Board’s Foreman), had visited the school to inspect the works proposed in the committees December report to the Board.. In reply to questions, Mr Little said that a mop for cleaning walls was not available but he hoped to secure a pole of suitable length to do the job. Mr Reedy said®he would endeavour to get an iron barrel which would serve as an incinerator. Mr Hamer said that so far efforts to secure the large castors for the piano had not met with success. The Board wrote, stating that the Superintendent of Works had been asked to report on the matters requiring attention at the school. Mr Wild (Board member), wrote wishing to meet the! members of the Dental Clinic Committee. The Secretary of the West! Coast School Committees’ Association wrote in reference to the quarterly journal. Mr J. Conning, secretary of the Hokitika Committee, wrote inviting Kumara children to join the excursion to Runanga. Members thought that the letter had arrived too late and also that, as the local picnic was being'held next Saturday, no action be taken. The Headmaster agreed to supply the Board with information sought in reference to fire extinguishers at the school. The annual fee was received for the rental of the School Reserve. Reference was made to the old Scholarship Board, which had been laid aside since the old school was demolished, several ex-pupils’ names now in various parts of New Zealand being on that honours board. A visit recently from an ex-pupil of the 90’s had drawn attention to the matter of having the board renovated. It was iesolved to make enquiries as to the' cost of such work. The question of the regular attendance of pupils again cropped up, and it was resolved respectfully to ask all parents to co-operate with the committee in seeing that scholars attend regularly. Accounts amounting to £6 16s 7d were passed for payment.
