PETAIN’S HOPES
A BETTER FRANCE Food Now Needed [Aus. & N.Z. Cable Assn.] * (Received J'anuary 19, 8.40 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 18. In a copyright message to the North American Newspaper Alliance from Vichy, Mr. Jay Allen states: I have had the first exclusive interview with Marshal Petain, who said; ‘•There is none who can say authoritatively what the resistance from the French colonies might have been worth, but it can be proved that resistance would have been paid for very dearly by the invasion of all of France and by a complete break between the Motherland and the Empire. We find ourselves to-day, having stood the trial. France has survived the national revolution of 194 t). France aims to restore community disciplines, to restore quality in labour, and’also a greater family life, However there will be empty cradles, because twenty million Frenchmen are in prison camps. We face a cruel winter. Thus there is the prospect of cradles with sick babies alongside of empty cradles.” Marshal Petain addressed an urgent appeal to America for food supplies.
