The French Line announced that the Vichy Government had arrived at an agreement with the British regarding French ships leaving Buenos Aires. They said the Mendoza was now assured of a free passage to Marseilles and also that the British would not molest the Campana, which is due to sail to-day, nor the Aurigny, Formosa and Katiola, which are preparing to take cargo. The Mendoza sailed from Punta del Este (Uruguay) for Marseilles without a navicert, but later put into Montevideo, where it was reported a British auxiliary cruiser was waiting to intercept her. The British Ministry of Economic Warfare stated that there was no intention of lifting the blockade on French ships leaving South American ports without navicerts.
