WELLINGTON RACES Wardress Surprises NIGHT ERUPTION WINS. TRENTHAM, January 18. Wardress, after being in an apparently hopeless position during the first half of the Racing dub Handicap at Trentham to-day, put in a spectacular run over the final halfmile and succeeded in beating Proud Fox by half a head in the final stride. It was an excellent performance on the part of the Riccarton mare, which has run some useful races for her owner-trainer Mrs J - Campbell, who leased her from Mr R. D. Westenra, who is serving with the forces overseas. . Wardress had worked her way into sixth position by the time the straight was reached and she responded gamely to a' solid ride by C. T. Wilson. Proud Fox was also fairly well back early but was close up when the straight was reached, and took the lead at the false rail. Royal Chief tailed off early and also made a game bid over final halfmile but weight held him to third place. The Buzzer did • well for fourth. Not Out, pacemaker, Native Song, Hunting Cat, and Little Robin were the most prominent to the straight, where they weakened. Sir Crusoe once more showed a liking for the course wlien' he put in an impressive run for victory in the January Handicap after losing ground at the start. This was his first success since the Otaki-Maori meeting in the middle oSb December, though he has been racing solidly since. Esperance Bay, Omapo, and Leighnor all had comfortable wins in the opening races. The weather and track conditions were excellent and there was a large attendance. The totalisator turnover for the day was £93,773 as against £102,803 10s on the second day last year. Results:— MUNG A R O A HIGH-W EIGHT HANDICAP.—2/2 ESPERANCE BA/ (R. Hawes) 1; 3/3 Black Musk (J.
