“PEOPLE’S VOICE”
AGAIN IN CIRCULATION CHRISTCHURCH, September 10. Although the printing press of the “People’s Voice” was confiscated by the police at Auckland on May 30, copies of the newspaper in cyclostyled form continue to be issued. The issues are circulated with circumspection, but numerous copies of the official journal of the Communist Party are being received by regular subscribers in Christchurch. In other centres, too, the typewritten “People’s Voice” is being circulated, notwithstanding the official banning of the publication. The printing press of the journal was seized the day after the issue of the regulations giving powers under the Censorship and Publicity Regulations to suppress subversion in the form of the printed word. The regulations empower the Attorney-General to order the seizure of any printingpress which has been used for printing any subversive statement, if he has reason to suspect that any further subversive statement may be produced. A report that in at least one suburb of Christchurch the “People's Voice” has been surreptitiously distributed has been investigated and found to be groundless. Subscribers continue to pay 2d a copy for the journel. Copies which were mysteriously thrown on to lawns in this suburb were of old issues of the journal.
