fOur Own Correspondent] At a special meeting, Mr W. Clarke presiding, the Miners’ Union considered the’ matter of increasing the sick benefit. The chairman said the fund was in a goocl position, while members idled by sickness could not claim social security benefit until they had been off for a week. He' thought something should be done, and Mr R; Jack (secretary) agreed, ft was decided that increases should be granted, and thht the secretary write to the Registrar to that effect. Mr T. Grace addressed the meeting in favour of setting up a Domain Board Committee, but one could not he formed, and Mr Grace- said he would call a public meeting at an early date, when it is hoped there will be a committee formed. The Patriotic Committee held their weekly dance in the Rechabite Hall,, and the attendance was good. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Mr O. Smallholme and Miss C. Strang, and a lucky spot waltz by Mr L. Shannon and Mrs T. Budd. Mrs R. Swan was at the piano, and Mr Plummer was M.C. The mine continues to work fulltime.
Mr and Mrs W. Strang left last Monday for Wellington, where Mrs Strang will attend the Women’s Institute Conference. Mr G. Jones, of Greymouth, paid a visit to Millerton last week-end. Mrs Anderson, of Runanga, visited Mr and Mrs R. Jack recently. The Physical Fitness Committee held their weekly whist drive on Monday evening, with a good attendance. The men’s prize was won by Mr R- Jack, and the ladies by Mrs A. Wood.
Mrs H. Gibson, of Westport, is spending a holiday at Millerton with Mr and Mrs T. Burchfield. Mr W. Clarke (delegate on the Buller Miners’ Central Committee) has been attending a district conference in Westport between the Grey and Buller Union delegates and the company officials. Millerton Thistle Soccer team play Western A (Christchurch) at Millerton on Sunday, in a Chatham Cup tie at 1.30. Weather conditions being favourable, this should be a good game. The home team will field a strong eleven, and the visitors have an excellent reputation. A large crowd of spectators can be expected. The following are the Thistle team: Blythe; Plummer, Robertson; Orman, Blythe, Plummer; Morgan, Orman, Taylor, Tiplady, Ewarp. Emerg.—Milligan. The Millerton Schoolboys’ Soccer team travelled to Stockton last Sunday to play Stockton boys, and the game ended in a draw, two goals each. Millerton seniors played Denniston Bachelors on the Domain on Sunday. The play was keen and interesting. Millerton won by 4 goals to 2, Mr J. Orman was referee.
