STOCKTON NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] The Patriotic Committee held their usual whist and euchre tournament in the Stockton Hail on Tuesday evening. Mr J. Connew and Miss K. Morgan were the winners of the euchre prizes and Mrs N. Morgan won Ist prize in the whist drive and Mrs R. Butterworth won 2nd prize

Mr and Mrs Russell of Granity were visitors to Stockton on Wednesday. Miss P. Haslam left on return to Denniston last Friday, after spending a holiday with Mr and Mrs J. Whiskers.

Miss J. Jose left for Wellington on Friday last after spending an extended holiday with her parents Mr ana Mrs J Jose Mr F. Jarland, an. employee of the Westport-Stockton Coal Company, is an inmate of the Bullet Hospital, and has successfully undergone an operation.

Messrs J. Lavery and H. L. Evans left on Tuesday morning to attend tue conference of the Buller and GreyCentral Committees, and the agreement conference to be held in the Westport Coal Company’s office. A general meeting of the Ngakawau Miners’ Union was held in the Stocktori Hall on Sunday. Nominations were called for Buller representative on the United Mine Workers’ National Council. Several nominations wereproposed, and the final selection insulted in Mr J. Lavery being the successful candidate. A committee was nominated to deal with all matters, to be placed before the Coal Commission which will be visiting the mil-r--ing townships in the near future. Tine following will represent the Union. President, secretary, both scrutineers, and Mr I. Tyler. The delegates to the District Conference which will be held in Westport on July 31, were instructed to enquire if the Coal Commission will inspect the mines on the termination of the conference. The Stockton Hockey team met Ngakawau on the Stockton Domain last Saturday. The ground was dry. though very rough. Ngakawau w-V too strong and experienced for the local players and scored eight goais to Stockton’s two. Mr J Shearer was the referee. On Sunday the Stockton schoolboys nlayed Millerton on the Stockton ground. At one stage it looked as though Stockton would win the McArthur Cup but Millerton scored a goal fifteen minutes before the final whistle blew, making a draw of tne game. Stockton 2, Millerton 2. Mr wMiller was the referee. Very keen interest has been displayed from the inception of schoolboy football m the district, both by the players and the public. The coaches must be given a word of praise for their untiring efforts to build up the teams in the Buller district. Stockton and Ngakawau seniors met on the Stockton Domain under good football conditions. The following players turned out for Stockton: R. Butterworth, W. Miller, A. Geddes. D Miller, D. Fleming, J. Connew, . M . Berry J. Shearer. W. Shearer. R. Whisker and R. Shearer. Ngakawau was somewhat weaker than usual the team being as follows: D. Stevenson, H. Campbell, J. Reid, J. Morgan J. Tipping, J. Tyler, G. Crackett, M. Hilt, Evans, Straker and Shaw. Stockton had the grade in their favour in the first half, but Ngakawau pressed for the first ten minutes, though they did not score. The first goal was scored by R. Shearer who gave the goalkeeper no chance. Shearer closed the gap between the side-line and the goal, and with a good snot placed the ball into the net. Stockton led at halttime by one goal to nil. After lemons Ngakawau tried hard to score, but the defence held. Stockton scored another goal before Ngakawau found the net, and the score stood at two goals to one in favour of Stockton. From a burst up the right, Whisker crossed the ball with a good shot towards the goal Reid, the Ngakawau full-bacK miskicked to send the ball past the goalkeeper into the net. Stockton o, Ngakawau one. Ngakawau again got within attacking distance and was. given a corner kick. Evans placed a splendid kick right in the centra or the cross-bar and as Fleming tried to clear with his head, the ball went into the hands of the Stockton but at this juncture, with the refer close at hand, Ngakawau was granted the score; as the g° alkeep^ s we re inside the goal area The final whistle sounded with Stockton leadl * by three goals to two. Mr C. Steele was the referee.
