Constable- G. S. Murray, of Greymouth, as a result of injuries received in a motor-accident at Kokatam is on sick leave.

The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. P. Fraser (says a Wellington Press Association telegram) has been confined to his home in Northland for the past two days with a slight cold.

Sergeant A. Barnes, of the Greymouth Police Force, has returnea from Auckland and resumes duty today. Sergeant E. J. C. Hay who has been relieving him at Greymoutn, leaves to-day on return to Chrlsichurch.

A Sydney cable states that the death occurred yesterday of Mr. Leslie John McKean, a leading New South Wales barrister, and Senior Crown Prosecutor, after three months’ illness. He was 55 years or age.

Miss Claire Furness, whose marrage to Mr A. E. Spivey takes place at St. Patrick’s Church on Monday, was yesterday farewellod and tendcred a presentation by the stim ol Woolworth’s, Ltd., Greymouth. In asking Miss Furness to accept a crystal water set, the manager, Mr L. Lake spoke eulogistically of the good qualities of Miss Furness, and extended the best wishes of all net fellow workers for her future happtress and prosperity. Other members of the staff joined in paying a tribute to Miss Furness, who made an appropriate response.

Mr Abe Johnston and ramily who are leaving the Rotom-j-nu district were i’arewelled prior to their departure at a dance organised by residents. The presentafion or a sum of money from the settlers and residents was made by Mr G. Gibson, Misses Kath, Susie and Jean Johnston were the recipients of a handbag each. Music was supplied by Mr N. Nestor. Dancing continued till a late hour. Prior to the dance. Mr Johnston was met by members of the Farmers’ Union. Several speakers expressed good wishes, and referred to his worn for the progress of .the district. The president, Mr Vatlance, on behalf or the union, presented Mr Johnston with a sum of money.

Mrs J. A. Jermyn, who will shortly leave Greymouth, to reside in Wellington was farewelied at the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Group of the Pan-Pacific Women’s Association, held at Revington’ s Hotel, on Thursday. Among those who spoke in appreciation of Mrs Jermyn’s wonc for the Group during her two years of office were Mesdames G. Black, W. M. Stewart, Allan Smith, A. V. Oliver, Misses N. Moffat, and B. Murphy. On behalf of the Group. Mis J. E. Thomas presented Mrs Jermyn with a shoulder spray and aJiandbag, extending good wishes for the future.

Captain R. F, Johnston who relinquishes his appointment as Assis-tanti-sDirejctorl o ; f Dental Services, northern military district, is transferred to the reserve of officers, according to the Gazette, Captain L. I*. Davies relinquishes a corresponding appointment in the central military * district, and is also transferred to the reserve of officers. Colonel J. H. Whyte is attached, temporarily, to th e general staff branch, 'Army Headquarters. Lieutenant-Colonel E. F. Selby, the Southland Regiment, relinquishes command of th e Ist Battalion, and is transferred to the reserve of officers.

The death is reported from London of Admiral H. W. Parker, C. 8.. C M.G. who was 65 years of age. He entered th e Navy in 1889, and was appointed Admiral in 1933. In 1916, he commanded H.M.S. Benbow at the Pattie of Jutland where he was mentioned m despatches. Deceased was Director of the Operations Division of the Naval Staff 1922-24; commanded H.M.S. Repulse on her Empire cruise, 1924,; Director of Naval Equipment, 192628 • commanded the First Cruiser Squadron, Mediterrangaa Fleet, 192830- vice-i Admiral commanding the Coastguard and Reserves 1931-33 He was placed on the retired list in 19u4.
