An official welcome was tendered at Parliament Building this morning to Dr. R. A. Millikan, the distinguished American physicist, who is visiting New Zealand in the course of an investigation into the problem, of cosmic rays. The Minister in- Charge ; of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr Sullivan),’ officially welcomed Dr. Millikan, the welcome being endorsed by the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Hamilton). :

The death occurred at. GreymoUth yesterday afternoon, following, a short illness, of Mr Joseph Brown,‘of-Dun-ollie. A native of Sergeant’s /Hill, Westport, aged. 69 years; deceased had been a resident of the’ Runanga-dis-trict for the' bast 16 years,; and' previous to that time, was proprietor? of the Australasian Hotel, tyith" his mother, he also conducted the Trafalgar (Railway) Hotel (GreymqSth) and the Denniston; Millerton an'd Waimangaroa Hotels. His wifepredeceased him 18 years ago and fie fs survived by two daughters, Miss Patricia Brown (Christchurch) and Brown (Dunollie) and three sons, Joseph, John and Ronald. The funeral will take place to-morrow. . • 1

The death occurred yesterday , at Christchurch of a well-known ' arid respected Hokitika resident, Miss Williana McLeod. A native of Gillespie’s Beach, South Westland, the late Miss McLeod had lived nearly all h<er life at Hokitika, and was 62 years of- age. She had been ailing only for, a short period, her death having beensomewhat unexpected. She leaves ' two sisters, Mrs. Jamieson (337, Cashel Street,’ Linwood, Christchurch) ,and Mrs. Smith (also of . Christchurch) and one brother, Mr. Donald McLeqd, of Hokitika. The relatives will have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their bereavement. The funeral will take place to-morrow, at Christchurch.

Mr Jack Osmers, who has resigned from the Traffic Branch of the Railway Department, to take over the well-known grocery business until recently conducted by Mr F. D.Whibley, at Marsden Road, Greymouth, was on Monday evening presented with a valuable chiming clock by his former fellow employees.' 'Mr G. Smart, Stationmaster, who presided, made the presentation; Mr W. Croft, on behalf of the train running officers; D. Beard on behalf of the Loco Department; Mr H. Congreve (Passenger Foreman), on behalf of the Station staff; Mr J. Sole'on behalf of the shunters and wharf employees,. and Mr Bert Petrie (a former railway empoyee) all made reference to the popularity and high esteem 'with which Mr Osmers was regarded by. his fellow employees in all departments, and wished him every success in-his business career. Mr Osmers suitably replied. ''
