Racing Notes

Novice Jumper Impresses: One of the latest additions to the jumping brigade at Ellerslie is Melvanui, who gave a first-rate display over several pony hurdles earlier in the week. The son of Te Monanui is the ideal type to make a name for himself as a hurdler when he has had the necessary experience, for he has plenty of size and also possesses abundance of speed.

Going On the Right Way: During the last couple of weeks Mon Acre has been given a few workouts over a middle distance and her efforts have been very satisfactory. This mare will probably make her next appearance in the Woodstock Stakes at the Waipa meeting, and it will be interesting to see how she acquits herself over the mile and a quarter journey.

Sprinter Doing Well: That good sprinter Suleiman is being kept in easy work on his owners falm at Orakau and is reported to be dointr well. In his five starts tms season Suleiman registered three firsts and one second, his last success being in the Suburban Handicap at Trentham in March, when he catned 9.6 and beat a select field.

In First-rate Order: Since racing at the Great Northern meeting Galilee has not been overtaxed, but she looks very bright and muscular. This mare will contest the Woodstock Stakes at the Watpa meeting next Saturday, and is sure to be in the firing line at the finish. Galilee has been successful on two occasions over a mile and a quarter within the last few months, and the fact that

she will be racing on her home track will be in her favour. Black Cat: Black Cat is now located at Fordell having been' purchased by Mr McA. Duncan as a brood mare. She has a filly foal to Iliad and is in foal to the same horse. Sporting Song: Sporting Song was in a bad way after his fall at Hastings, and had to be destroyed on Thursday last. He has been air unlucky horse practically throughout his racing career. Liberal Star: Liberal Star has jusned H. Dulieu’s stable. A half-brother by Sandstav to Liberal’s Mint, he is a fine type of hunter. Dulieu also has Ohanga back in work, and will qualify him for hunting events.

Sang Bleu Dead: Sang Bleu, who carried the colours of Mr F. Parker, died a couple of days ago, as the result of internal trouble. Eu rotas:

Eurotas failed to do any good at Wanganui, but he may be seen to better advantage at Otaki next week. The Pantheon gelding is a good looker and should yet reward L. G. Butler for the care and attention he has bestowed on the gelding. Amigo: Amigo has not been asked to do any fast work since racing at Wanganui, but is in great heart, and with one or two gallops should strip at his best at Trentham. Lowenberg: W. H. Dwyer has kept Lowenberg in steady work since Wanganui, and the Lord Quex gelding appears to be making good progress. He is to be given a race at Otaki, and this should brighten him up for the Trentham meeting. Should Lowenberg go on the right way he will probably be taken to Australia in the spring for the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups. Middle:

Middle, in the same stable, is rapidly getting into racing shape again, and it appears only a matter of him standing upto his work for the Centre, piece gelding to win some more money either on the flat or over hurdles for Mr lan Higgie. Entail: Entail and Homily were sent out to Koatanui for a few weeks’ spell after the Wanganui meeting, but they are t 0 be brought in again in a couple of weeks to be got ready for the Wanganui spring meeting. Rehearsal: Rehearsal is being kept pottering about, and Portal, Submission and Dynasty are also in easy work. They will not be seen out again until the Wanganui spring meeting.

Artful Dodger: Artful Dodger was not started at Wanganui as he had not been up long enough. The Dauilof gelding is coming on well and will be seen out at Otaki, after which he may race at Trentham in one or two of the shorter hurdle events.

Airing: Airing is now owned by Mr J. Nicholson, who was made a present of the Cockpit gelding after the Wanganui meeting. Purchased bj” Mr F. Bristol at the yearling sales in 1932 for 25gns, Airing won a lot of money for that sportsman. Although he has lost much of his former brilliance, the gelding might do well over hurdles if put to that game.
