Made no Difference

DRIFTED IN BETTING. THE TRUMP’S FINE EFFORT. A betting drift made no difference to The Trump’s chance at Flemington on June 3. The dual Cup hero of 1937 ran right up to his best form, and with 9.6 on his back, won running away from Panax and Mutable. Both the winner and runner-up made unsuccessful trips to Sydney in the autumn. The Trump had been freshened up since his return home, but judging by the market his heavy betting owner, Mr. Darcy Eccles, was not particularly keen on his chance. When Mr. Eccles fancies one of his horses his confidence is generally reflected in decreasing prices, but The Trump was at really good odds. With his usual rider, Ashley Reed, in the saddle, The Trump’s success was characteristic of his triumphs in the spring of 1937. He did not have to go round one horse and obtained a rails run at the top of the straight. Behind Mystic Lady, Court Gossip, Panax and Pibroch about half a mile from home, he dashed through to take the lead half-way down the straight and won well enough to ensure his entry for the forthcoming Cups.
