IGNITION OF GAS
In Co-operative Mine EXAMINER SEVERELY INJURED. As the result of an ignition of gas in Hunter and Party’s Co-operative coal mine, above Dunollie, about 7.30 o’clock yesterday morning, Mr Louis Smithson, 45, of Runanga, was severely injured, suffering shock and severe burns to the face, head, back, arms and legs. Previously, gas was non-existent in this particular mine, and it was the practice of all employees to use naked lamps. It is understood that in the course of his examination as examining deputy, Mr Smithson encountered a leakage of gas from a fault in a seam. Despite his severe burns, and the extinguishing of his lamp, he made his way to the mine-mouth, where the miners were awaiting the result of his examination. It is customary to make such a test for the purpose of ascertaining the presence of gas. Dr. W. J. Dickel, of Runanga, treated Spiithson for his injuries, and he was later admitted to the Grey Hospital. His condition last evening was reported to be satisfactory, but it will be several days before the full extent of the injuries can be ascertained. The Chief Inspector of Mines, Mr W. Parsonage, made an inspection of the mine yesterday morning. No damage was caused to the mine, and work will resume on Monday. In future, safety lamps will be used in this mine.
