GREY MAIN SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. The mbnthly meeting of the Grey 'Main School Committee was held last evening, where there were present: Messrs A. E. Morgan E. V. Ellery, M. K. B. Sheard, T. ’ 1-J, Smith, J. L. Patterson, G. Batty, IT. J. Logan, C. Shapcott (Secretary). The Headmaster (Mr. J. Graham), was also in attendance. An apology for absence was received from Mr. W. Williams. The Chairman said that it was hoped to have one of the basketball courts ready for playing purposes when the school resumed next week. This court, the first one, required another coat of tar. It was also hoped to have the second court prepared in the near future. A vote of condolence was passed with Mr. Sheard, in the loss ot his father.
The appointment of Miss M. M. Blazey as Assistant-Mistress on teaching staff of the Grey Main School, was approved.- There were two applicants.
The Headmaster reported that the children’s fancy dress ball was a great success, and a profit of £2O was realised. He wished to thank the ladies for their efforts in connection with the supper, and Mr. Williams and his Orchestra, whose services were free for the evening. The Canterbury Education Boara ( advised that the Committee’s capita-j tion allowed for the year commencing April 1, 1938, was: Grey Main School £283 14s Od; Blaketown Side School £9O 14s Od; total £374 Bs. This would be paid in monthly instalments of £3l 4s Od.
The Canterbury Education Board advised that the foremar had been requested to submit a report regarding the provision of a bicycle shed to acocmmodate 50 to 60 cycles; and the enlargement of staff room. The Chairman said that the Foreman, Mr. T. Horsby, was forwarding a report and estimates for the jobs. With regard to the bicycle shed, the proposal was that the committee should offer to supply material if the Board supplied the labour. The Canterbury Education Board' advised that the Foreman had been authorised to attend the following matters at the Blaketown School: Renewal of iron on roof of gymnasium porch; installation of a stove in the gymnasium; provision of a sheet of hyloplate for infants in the gymnasium; repair of the front picket fence. A proposal for remodelling to provide a porch over the main entrance door, and provision for two additional lavatories, were being included in the Board's application to the Education Department for the erection of extra classrooms. As larger grounds would be required for Blaketown as a separate school, representations were being made t? the Grey Harbour Board .with a view to obtaining an extension at the rear of the present site. Messrs Smith and Logan were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. Messrs Batty and Ellery were appointed as the Committee's representatives on the Sub-Committee to go into the question of the Assembly Hall.
Tributes were paid to the caretaker, Mr. W. Gleeson, by the Headmaster and members of the Committee. ori the cleanliness of the school and its general condition. A suitable increase was made in the Caretaker’s salary.
Accounts totalling £4 48s 2d were passed for payment.
It was decided to extend hearty congratulations to Mr. 11. Herring, a former member of the committee, on his success in the Borough Council election. ■' !
It was decided to purchase a series' of reference books, three for the
Grey Main School library and one for Blaketown.
