REEFTON, May 16.
The “community sing” held on Sunday night was well attended. Messrs K. Archer and L. Robinson were song leaders and Mrs. W. Nicnois presided at the piano in her usual efficient manner. Items were given bj' Miss Courtney and Mr. Robertson (piano and 'piano accordeon duet), Miss M. McHenrj' (song)', Miss Rodden (song and tap dance), Miss Joan Ward and Joyce Chapman (duet and minuet). Mr. S. Purton (piano accordeon solo), Mrs. Sharp (solo), Mrs. Taylor (solo), Mrs. Ward (solo), Messrs Flahertj' and Robbins (instrumental duet), Miss Sullivan (Sailor’s Hornpipe). A Hawaiian dance by Waiuta children, led by Miss Rodden, all contributed to a most enjoyable evening. Mr. E. Riley returned thanks to the Waiuta Branch for attending in such large numbers and supplying me majority pt items on lhe programme. He announced that. Mr. A. S. Richards, Labour M.P., would* be speaking here next Sunday night at tne Criterion Theatre, and consequently there would be no community sing on that night.
The funeral of the late Mr. Patrick Hannan took place on Saturday morning, when there was a large attendance, which included many friends of deceased from Grey Valley. The prayers at the Church of the Sacrea Heart and at lhe graveside in the Suburban Cemetery, were read bj' the Rev. Father Hughes.
The rugby football match, Buller v. Inangahua, played on the Reefton Racecourse on Saturday afternoon, was a very fine game to watch, and great interest was taken in the contest. The first spell ended in favour pf the Inangahua team bj' six points to 3, but Buller scored twice in the last few minutes of the game, wTHSh ended: Buller 12, Inangahua 9. The local forwards were fully as good as the visitors, but combination was ■lacking to finish off their movements. Neighbours did all the scoring tor Buller. The visitors returned home in the evening. At the April meeting of the Cronadun Women’s Institute, Mrs. J. O’Regan presided over a good attendance. Two new members were welcomed. The motto for the month was "He Who is Ashamed of Asking is Ashamed of Learning,” and the roll call, "First Aid Hints,” was well responded to. The euchre held on the 26th proved very successful, and it was decided to hold another in the near iuture. Arrangements were finalised for Miss Eva Buckland, the delegate appointed, to attend the half yearly meeting at Greymouth. The election of officers, postponed from the previous meeting, resulted: President, Mrs. J. O'Regan (re-elected), Vice Presidents, Mrs. J. Coghlan and Mrs. A. Cohen; Secretary, Miss M. McCormack; Points Secretary, Mrs. G. Carson. The retiring Secretary, Mrs. A. Cohen, was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The prize for the most points in the monthly competition resulted in Misses Eva Buckland and M [McCormack, equal, for first, and Mrs. iT. E. McMahon runner-up. The competition for the month, a button-hole to be worked at the meeting, was won iby Mrs. J. O’Regan and Mrs. C. I Wright. Mrs. G. Carson, Mrs. A. iCohen and Miss McCormack tied for [second place. The lunch provided by members was heartily enjoyed.
