DENNISTON NOTES

i Personal: I Mr Arthur Lester, who has been spending his holidays with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Lester, of Dennis- , ton, has returned to Palmerston North. ‘ I Mrs P. Cummings, who has been spending a holiday at Karamea, has returned to her home at Denniston. Mr Don Marr, is still convalesent from an injury to his knee whilst employed at the C.B.D. mine. Mr. W. Baird, of the Plateau, who has been off work for some time, is spending a holiday at Nelson. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery to normal health. , Mr. Tom Muir, of the Christchurch Training College, is spending term holidays with his parents. Miss’ P. Philp, a pupil of the Christchurch Arts College, is spending the term holidays with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Philp, at Marshallvale. i- Mr. G. Brownlie, of Christchurch , Teachers’ Training College, is spending a holiday with his motner, Mrs. W. Brownlie, at Denniston. Mrs. T. Dellaway, of Denniston, who has suffered acutely with illness, is at present at Rotorua, where there is every hope of affecting a cure should the treatment continue long enough. Everyone on Denniston hopes that this" popular resident will quickly regain his normal health. I Mr. W. Burt, is spending a holiday 'with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. | Burt, at Denniston. Mr. and Mrs. J. Parker, of Burnlet t’s Face, have returned from Wellington. I Mr. Jack Worgan, has returned I from his trip to Australia with the returned soldiers. The Denniston Mines continue to work steadily. Several former employees have again started work with the Westport Coal Company. The result of the ballot under the preferencial system of voting, was that Mr. C. Smith was elected President of the Union, and Mr. A. Raffles as -eputyCheckweighman. The West Coast conference between representatives of the Coal Companies and the miners’ organisations will take place at Westport on Monday next. Many remits have been forwarded from the local Union. The National delegate will be in attendance, and Mr. Bishop (Secretarj' of the Coal Owners’ Association).
The Bowling Club members have enjoyed some good games, but unfortunately manj' week-ends have been spoiled bj' heavy rain. At a general meeting it was decided to have the greens top-dressed as soon as possible. When Denniston Women’s Institute held a children’s party, there was a large attendance. Miss E. Shand presided at the piano. Dancing, recitations, vocal and other musical items were given. A plentiful afternoon tea was served by a ladies’ committee, and satisfied all, present. The proceeds will go to the School Wireless Fund.
At Denniston Women’s Institute meeting, Mrs. D. Coburn presided over a good attendance. Two new members were accorded a welcome. The roll call was “Uses of Methylated Spirits.” Mrs. J. Cullen gave the travel talk, “Round the Shetland Islands,” which proved rtiost interesting. A competition (fancy basket) resulted: Mrs. L. Ward Ist., Mrs. C. Jack 2nd., Mrs. D. Coburn 3rd. Another Competition (cuddly toy), resulted: Mrs. J. Allan Ist., Mrs. L. Ward 2nd., Mrs. D. Coburn 3rd. The social half hour was spent in musical items, including community singing. A da’intj' supper was served by the hostesses.
The Caledonian Society’s annual general meeting was presided over by Mr. Matt Hewitson, but was poorly attended. The balance sheet was accepted as most satisfactory. The election of officials resulted as follows: Chief, Mr. W. Baird; Secretary, Mr. J. Black; Committee, Messrs M. Hewitson, H. Baird, J. Allen, J. Rattray, J. Meek and G. Meek. Mr. Matt. Hewitson was elected as Chief during Mr. W. Baird’s absence from the district. The Ladies’ Committee elected are: Mesdames J. Allan, M. Hewitson, W. Baird, H. Baird, A. Slaven, J. Johnson, J. Meek. It was agreed that subscriptions remain the same as last year, 7s for a married couple and 3s 6d for a single person. The Society intend to run a carnival dance, the proceeds going to a most enthusiastic member of the Society who has been on the sick list for several weeks. The date for the Ingleside will be decided later. Denniston Club’s Snooker Tournament drew a big field and some very close games eventuated. In the final, Mr. Dick Stead defeated Mr. Dave Hewitson in a very close game. Members appreciate the number of new books placed on the shelves recently New members will be welcomed.
