MILLERTON NOTES

Mr Evans of Summerhill has arrived on the Hill to take up duties as head-teacher of the local school. He was accompanied by Mrs Evans. His friends were pleased to learn that the Hon W. H. Mclntyre has been re-elected to the Buller CountyCouncil and the Buller Hospital Board Mr S. Hawthorne has arrived at Millerton to start work in the mine. The local mine continues to work full time. Messrs G. Orman and P. Fox left on Fridaj' to play in the Rugby League games at Christchurch. Mr Orman’s opinion of the Rugby League code is enthusiastic, and the exRugby hooker is verj' hopeful of demonstrating his abilities as a rake. If he can reach his last year’s form Orman has an exceptionally good chance of going with the New Zealand League team to Australia.
The Thistle Soccer team travelled to Waimangaroa on Sunday to pla.y an eleven from Waimangaroa and won bj' 4 goals to nil. The local players speak very highly of the j'oung team’s showing and consider that after a little more practice at the game, they should develop into a good eleven. The Thistle Soccer Club held a social and dance in Peggie’s Hall on Saturday night. There was a good attendance. Music was provided by Mr A. Mclntyre.
The members of the General Labourers’ Union held a meeting in Peggie’s Hall on Sunday when Mr W Watson was in the chair. Correspondence was dealt with from Mr Wilcox (District Secretary) also from the Labour Party’s National Secretary (Mr D. Wilson). A letter was received from Mrs E. McGowan Secretary of the Spanish Aid Fund. After a lengthy discussion the men decided to increase the Labour Party Campaign Fund to one shilling each fortnight and to give a similar sum to the Spanish Aid Fund. A motion of confidence in the representative was carried. The Millerton Medical Association held a special meeting in Peggie’s Hall on Thursday night, Mr R. Jack was in the chair, Mr T. Burchfield (secretary) read out correspondence received from Doctor Hooper of Wanganui who was one time the local Doctor. The correspondence stated that Doctor Harkness would probably take the vacancy at Millerton and a letter was received from Dr Harkness stating that he would pay a visit to Millerton at the end of the month. The meeting decided that the medical officials interview the doctor when he arrives and endeavour to secure his service for Millerton. Other business was in regard to the balance sheet. After a lengthy discussion, the meeting decided that the past ’ and present secretaries and Mr Finlayson go through the balance sheet and endeavour to place it on a satisfactory footing prior to Mr T. Burchfield the new secretary taking over.
