FIRE AT LIMEWORKS. [Per Press Association]. WANGANUI, August 12. Fire at the Waitotara limeworks was discovered at one o’clock this morning. There was ample water, but no pumping appliances. The Wanganui Brigade sent two men out with an engine and saved half the works, and also the permanent way and power lines. Considerable damage was done to the machinery. A new plant, recently ordered, has not arrived yet, and the works expect to re-start shortly. POLICE RECRUITS. WELLINGTON, August 11. Having completed their three ■months probationary training, the 124 new police constables were inspected at Trentham to-day by the Minister in charge of Police (Hon. P. Fraser), accompanied by the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D. J. Cummings. The men will leave the training camp within the next few days on being posted to their stations.
