BLACKBALL NOTES

[Our Own Correspondent] Mr Roy Duncan, of Atarau, fnet with a serious accident while working at the dismantling of ihe Brian Boru dredge on Thursday afternoon of la*t week. He and his mate were working a crab winch, when, through some cause unknown, the winch catch slipped, and the handle caught Duncan under the chin and broke his jaw bone. He was brought to Blackball and attended by Dr. Fitzgerald, and later was conveyed to the Grey Kapital, where he is progressing very favourably. His many friends will wish him a speedy recovery. Mr F. Findlater was removed to the Grey Hospital last Saturday night. to undergo an operation for appendicitis. All wish him a speedy recovery. Mr and Mrs L. Kinsella, Hart Street, left on Monday morning for Christchurch, where they intend spending a short holiday. Mrs McGregor, Hilton Street, w spending a holiday in Christchurch and district. Mr Sam Clark left on Monday on return to Gillespie’s Beach road. South Westland. He is now fully recovered from his injury. On Friday night of last week, the Committee of the Cochrane Assistance Fund were.the guests of Mr and Mrs Cochrane at their home in Stafford Street, when the money collected on Mr Cochrane’s behalf was formally handed over to him. The chairman, Mr J. Haisty, junr., conveyed to Mr Cochrane the very best wishes of his wide circle of friends for a safe journey to the old land, and a very successful outcome of his quest for good health. The secretary of the fund (Mr R. Clark) spoke at length, and reviewed all the circumstances that had led up to the launching ol the scheme. He would see Mr Cochrane safely away on his home journey and had every confidence that something could be done to help him on his arrival in Auld Reekie, the auld grey toon.” Others of the committee expressed good wishes, and Mr Cochrane’s health was toasted in a eulogistic speech by Mr N. J. Gibson, being enthusiastically drunk by all present. Mr Cochrane, in reply, wished ,to thank all the committee .for ■•’■"if they had done for him, and to I'm good people who had so kindly contributed to his assistance. He would always gratefully remember his many kind friends on the West Coast and in New Zealand generally. Quite a crowd arrived during the evening, and a good time was spent. Mr Jimmie Kidd was in great fettle, and kept the company in amusement, being a most delightful raconteur, whose prowess ought to be made known bo ■ yond the confines of our village. Ho would meet with a ready and appreciative audience in any community. Tea was served by Mesdames Cochrane, Moore, and Gibson, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. The gathering broke up in the small hours, all combining in wishing Mr Cochrane a safe and successful return, and all promising a great “tangi” on his return to New Zealand. At the usual Ingleside of the Caledonian Society, held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last Friday night, Mr R Clark was the guest of the evening At the supper interval, the Chief of the Society, Mr T. Maguigan, look occasion to eulogise the previous Chief, and called upon him to accept a travelling rug as a slight token of appreciation from the Society members. Mr Clark, who was received with musical honours, thanked all present for their gift. He traced the activities of the Society from its formation, having been actively associated with it during all the years (nineteen) which it had been in existence He wished the Society every success in the future, as in the past. The usual dance programme was thoroughly enjoyed by all. Mr D. Cochrane left by Tuesday s express for Christchurch, en route to Auckland, where he will embark on the R.M.S. “Arawa” for Southampton. He was conveyed to Stillwater by car, driven by Mr Moore, and accompanied by Mrs Moore, Mr R. Clark, and Mrs Cochrane. A big crowd collected at his home the previous evening and on Tuesday morning, Ic wish him good-bye and bon voyage. His "wife accompanied him to Christchurch, and Mr Clark will see him safely aboard the “Arawa” at Auckland, travelling to the northern city with him. While passing through Wellington en route to Auckland, Messrs Cochrane and Clark will be the guests of Mr and Mrs Phil Gilbert, 22 Moir Street. Mr and Mrs Gilbert are old West Coasters. Appended is the fourth list of subscriptions for the Cochrane Assistance Fund.
