HOKITIKA NOTES
(Our Own Correspondent). HOKITIKA, August 5. The twenty-first anniversary nail of the Returned Soldiers' Association was held at the Soldiers’ Hall last evening and attracted an attendance of fully three hundred. The Victorian Dance Band supplied excellent music, while the supper arrangements were first rate, and Mr. F. McGregor, as M.C., kept the ball rolling merrily. There has been a fall of snow in the back country, causing a chill in the air. It is expected that whitebait will begin to run during the next couple of weeks. At Christchurch, the fish is selling at present at the rate of 10s per lb. The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Perry, yesterday extended at the Library steps a civic welcome to Rev. J. McKenzie (Presbyterian), R. Dudley (Methodist) and Pastor Stuart (Church of Christ), who are conducting this week a mission in the respective churches here. The Mayor spoke of a need at present to return to the deep and simple things in life. The Missioners referred to the need for a spiritual movement to prevent material progress obscuring the higher life.
The death recorded at London on Wednesday of Mrs. Mabel L. Watson, of Reefton, removes one who . was formerly well known here, as Miss Mabel Orr, a native of Hokitika, and daughter of the late Thomas Orr. The funeral this afternoon of the late Jack Ross was very largely attended, a considerable number of motor cars being in the cortege, while a large number were afoot. A guard of honour was formed by the members of the Returned Soldiers’ Association and the Fire Brigade, while the pall bearers were Messrs H. Davidson, C. Preston, J. Cutbush and W. Eastgate. There were many wreaths in evidence.. Rev. Mr. Davies conducted the service at All Saints’ Church and at the cemetery. A number of the streets are at present undergoing excavation for the laying of new pipes for the water supply. A considerable number of men are engaged and have taken the work from the reservoir to Gibson Quay, and along Hamilton Street, and Weld Street is now being opened up. In the last-named street yesterday, a motorist drove his car into the excavation, but it was not damaged. West Coast cattle sold yesterday at Addington included: Estate W. F. Diedrichs (Kokatahi), 8 steers at £l3 7s 6d to £l3 12s 6d, 5 steers £l6 bs to £2O, 15 steers £l5 12s 6d to £l6 12s t>d; W. Jamieson (Koiterangi), 8 heifers £lO 17s 6d to £l2 7s 6d, 9 steers £l3 12s 6d, heifer £9 17s 6d; T. Pipson (Ruatapu), 7 bullocks £lO 7s 6d to £l5 12s 6d. The semi-final of the Ladies’ Golf Club’s Mahinapua Cup resulted as follows: Mrs. Mclntyre beat. Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Millen beat Miss Anderson, and in the finals played on Wednesday, Mrs. Mclntyre beat Mrs. Millen.
