REEFTON, April 23

The heavy rain yesterday culminated in falls of snow at various!/ -ces. At Big River two inches lay S ti the ground, while at Merrigigs it was lighter, and at Maruia and Lewis Pass snow also fell, while the atmosphere wa s bitterly cold. The Paparoa Ranges too,, have a good coating of snow, and this morning at Reefton was particularly cold. There, was a very large attendance at the five hundred tournament held by the Fire Brigade, at the Brigade Hall last evening, and a very pleasant evening was spent in the comfortable room, which was well heated- The ladies’ prize was won by Miss Farrell and the men’s by Mr W- Smith. The supper dispensed was heartily enjoyed. Mr/ Price Hamer, of Totara Flat, underwent an operation at Reefton Hospital last night, and was reported this morning as doing wellThe Hospital Board at its meeting passed the following accounts: Pecuniary assistance £9 ss; salaries £2Ol 2s; Harold Bros- £4O 19s; W- August £ll 4s; W- Bailey £9; M- Banks £lB 1.45; L- Lochore £2 15s 6d, Irsbourn Bites- 18s; Electric Light Co- xi ss 4<l; N-Z- Drug Co. £4 10s. lOd; J. Open drains in Bridge Street are to have attention. It was decided to offer no objection to applications by Miss C- M- Morris for special ciaims. The engineer! is to repair bridges aj Brown and Rough Creeks, and at Creighton’s, Maruia. The grader is to be put on Maru’a roadThe engineer is to report re road access to J. J- Coghlan’s coal mine at Boatman’s.

At the meeting of the County Council there- were present: Crs- F- WArcher (acting-chairman), F- Seawright, G- B- Mclnroe, T- W’atson, JO’Regan, W. S- Clark and W- Blackadder. The following decisions were made: That Mr T- H- Lee, the only applicant;, be appointed to the position of county assessor; that Mr Leo Bell be offered the sum of £3 to effect repairs to track at h’s farm; that tenders be called for a supply of 800 yards of gravel for Maruia road; that the engineer effect repairs to Byrne’s road, expending £35 on same; that the engineer attend to erection of protective works at Burton’s Creek Bridge; that the engineer be instructed to place 600 yards of gravel on Blackwater road; that tenders be called for erection of Women’s Rest Room and Plunket Room at Reefton. tenders to close at next meeting; that each County Councillor be supplied with a list in order that donations fori the room may be solicited and Councillors agreed to each head the list for his particular district with £5; that a tender of £204 6ik 6d for Coal Creek Uoad from Messrs Chandler and Hunter bo accepted; that Robert IL White be given a license to erect private telephone line at Maruia; that R- W. Lester be granted connection of private telephone line with toll station; that £2O received from Lord Nuffield be set aside, and that the County Chairman and town members be a committee to administer same for relief of distress as outlined in the letter'; that £5 be voted for the George V Memorial; that a county employee be placed on improvements to Reefton streets! for three months; that the Public Works be asked to approve removal of dangerous corner on Blackwater road at Sleeper CreekAt Inangahua Hospital Board’s ordinary meeting the Medical Superintendent reported for the month: Admitted 30, discharged 32, died 0, remaining 32, X-rays 11, births 6, anaethetics 5 general, 1 local; No. of outpatients 3, attenances 7. Matron Kane reported as follows: Nurse Hughes is at present on annual holiday. Miss Rita McLean is relieving. Mr D. Scott desires to commence annual leave as early as convenient. Miss Valmai Honey (housemaid) who has been on sick leave reports that she will not be returning to hospital for duty. The secretary submitted estimates for th e coming year, which were approved. Mr Seawright brought up the matter of a destructor to destroy waste matter, etc., from th e hospital, at present being deposited in the river.—lt was decided to enquire i(nto the cost. Kathleen M. Blackadder wrote applying for position of probationer at hospital.-—Filed for reference. Sister C. George wrote stating that the earliest she could commence duties was May 16. The Wellington Hospital Board wrote re Section 92 of th e Hospital and Charitable Institutions Act and also stating that the Board was prepared to enter into a reciprocal agreement with the Inangahua Board. It was carried that the Board enter into such, agreement. The Prime Minister wrote in regard to proposal to inaugurate the King George V. National Memorial Fund for the permanent establishment of children’s health camps in New Zealand, and stating that donations by local bodies to the national fund will be validated by Parliament.—Resolved to donate £2 2s.
