MILLERTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent)

The local mine continues to work full time.

Mr G. Williams, of Westport, is at present visiting Millerton. Mr R. Finlayson attended a meeting of the Westport Hospital Board on Tuesday.

Nurse Maddison. of the Westport Hospital, paid a visit to the Hill during the week. Constable McQuarrie has returned to the Hill after an extended holidayConstable Gonlej r , who has been relieving on the Hill, has returned to Westport. Mr A. Moreton has left to take up a position in Greymouth. The Stockton and Millerton Women’s Institute held a combined evening in the Stockton School to welcome Mrs Deans, Dominion president. A social evening and dance was held last Friday, in the Reehabite Hall, to bid farewell to Sister Williams, who has been a member for the last ,18 years and Juvenile Superintendent for a number of years. Brother A. Mclntyre, C.R., in a short speech, thanked Sister Williams for her past services and wished her the best of luck in her new home. Brother Mclntyre then called on Sister E. Mclntyre, past chief ruler, to make the presentation of a beautiful chromium clock. Sister: Burchfield presented a bouquet, on behalf of the Juveniles Tent. Brother iV. Prosser paid, a tribute to the good work done by Sister Williams tor the young people, and hoped she would continue to do so in Westport when the Reehabite Order was established. A dainty supper was then served. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs R. Swan. Mr J. McAlister and A. Mclntyre. M.C., Mr J. Young. The first Rugby game of the season was played on the local domain on Saturday between Stars Juniors (Westport) and Rangers. The weather was fine and the game was very keenly contested, as the final score testifies. The homo side won by 6 points to 3. Rangers’ tries were scored by H. Nicholls and A. Mclntyre, both being unconverted. Stars points came from a penalty goal kicked by T. Mcflerron. Mr E. Smith had control of the game. The first junior Soccer game was played on the local domain on Sunday between Denniston and Millerton. The weather was ideal and some very good football was played. The game ended in a draw, 3 goals each. With good coaching, these young players should improve before many games have been played. Mr G. Orman refereed the game. A number of the “All Black” footballers are endeavouring to tutor the ■local school children in the art of Soccer, and with a little perseverance there is no doubt their efforts will bear fruit, as thej r have good talent to work with.

The Seddonville bowlers arrived at Millerton on Sunday to play the local bowlers in the Ballinger Buckle Challenge game. The visitors had a strong side, and the Millerton players were certainly tested on the day’s play. Results (Seddonville mentioned first): — Nevin,' McGuire, Simpson, Forsyth (s) 15, lost to Harker, Milligan, Smith, Riddell (s) 17; Mulholland, Fleming, Philps, Bain (s) 17, lost to Nicholl, J. Orman, Clarke, Russell (s) 19. The ladies’ committee provided afternoon tea.

The Unemployed IWork'ers’ held their meeting on Sunday. Mr W. Watson presided. A reply from the Hon. P. C. Webb in connection with the placing of unemployed workers on the Hill on P.IW.D. work in the district received a great amount of discussion, and was not commented on most favourably by those present at the meeting. The men decided to make further representations in regard to this matter.

According to press reports, the Trade Unity Conference was a great success, and officials have been appointed. It is pleasing to see that the United Mine Workers’ secretary, Mr A. McLagan, is president, and that Mr R. Eddy is vice-president, Mr F. Cornwell (secretary-treasurer), also Messrs F. P. Walsh and E. Canham as residential executive members. The New Zealand Federation of Labour is the name this organisation is to adopt, and it is to be hoped all delegates who attend endeavour to do their utmost to further and strengthen this great organisation of Labour. One would hope that district councils will be formed at an e ai 'ly date, giving thpse unions and others an opportunity to affiliate with the national body. After all, every union was not in a position to send a delegate to the national conference, and it is only through the forming of the district councils that strength can come to this new federation, both district and nationally.
