BLACKBALL NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) The attention of the Hon. D. G. Sullivan Minister of Railways, has been called to the serious encroachment of the Grey River, on the Goat Terrace side, just above the bridge spanning the Grey, between Blackball and Ngahere. The encroachment ’is menacing t/he 'embankment and if the river should break through it would mean extending the bridge for 8 or 10 chains further, to span the gap. In the meantime, a total dislocation of all railway traffic, which would mean a very secions thing to the district would be m. evitable. The Minister has been ask. ed to get his Engineers ‘to inspect and report on the matter and in a letter received by the Union secretary, the Minister promises to have the whole matter reported on. His attention was al-io drawn to the serious shortage of rolling stock on the local railways and he' promises to go into the matter, with a view to having this remedied. In a copy of the “Midlothian Advertiser” a Scottish paper rceeised by a resident in the township last week, the death notice appears of Agnes Campbell. widow of the late Angus McLagan'. at Parkhead Cresent, West Calder. The late Mrs. McLagan was mother of the Miners’ National Secretary, Mr. A. McLagan and of Mr. R. M.eLagan of this district to whom ■the sympathy of all friends will go in their bereavement.

Mrs. D. O’Callaghan and her son Dick, wh 0 have been visiting Mrs. R. Smith, Main Road, prior to proceeding to Wataroa, where in future' they will reside, left. Blackball yesterday. Mr.’ and Mrs. J. D. Doak, and family Old School House, have loft for Christchurch, where they will in future reside. Mr. Doak was engineer, on the Argo Dredge and the change has been decided upon owing to the continued ill health of his wife. It is to be- sincerely hoped that the change of climate wil’l be all that is necessary, to restore Mrs. D'oak to good health. Mr. Geo Smith. Main, Road, one of the men hurt, on the Reef ton saddle job some time ago, has now completely recovered and has returned to work. Mr. W. Dillon second son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Dillon, Clifford Street, has been admitted to the Grey Hospital for treatment.

On latest reports, the condition of Mr. G. Hall Brodie Street, an inmate of Grey Hospital for some time, is re-ported-as satisfactory. The spell of bad weather reached a climax towards the week-end when actual winter conditions existed. Snow

fell steadily and the Faparoas are well mantled in a white blanket. The temperature fell rapidly and . big fires, are the older of the day. The congratulations of all Unionists and friends will be extended to Mr A. McLagan on his appointment, to the chairmanship of the Federation gf Labour. He will fill , the position with dignity and ability and all will look forward to a idistinctive lead being given to the industrial movement, under his able leadership.

A meeting of the Blackball Returned Soldiers’ Association (Sub Branch) was held in the Miners’ Hall on Sun. day, April 4th. Mr. E. Jones (chair, man) presided over a fair attendance. Correspondence was very light and was soon disposed of without much discus, sion. It was resolved that G. Nuttall and Mr E.. Jones interviewed the headmaster re sale of poppies for Anzae Day.
