WESTPORT NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent). School Committee: WESTPORT, April 23. The monthly meeting of the Westport School Committee' was- held last evening. Mr T. Parfitt' occupied /the chair. The W.E.A. was granted the use ot a room for Thursday next. The use of the ground was granted to the Basketball Association for the season. The chairman was appointed to replesentl the committee on ■ the Health Camp Memorial Fund. The sum of £lO was granted for luncheon bags for children on Coronation D'ay. Messrs Bird, Hart and Anderson were authorised to look after same. n Messrs Rees. Hart, Dobson and Parfitt were appointed a Clmie Committee and also as a sub-committee for attend, ing to school matters generally. Messrs .Tope, Anderson and Bird weie appointed a grounds committee, with Mr Anderson as convenor. The resignation of M.r Harris as hon. secretary wa s received with regret, and appreciation was expressed ot his long and valuable service. The appointment of a successor was held over till next meeting. The Headmaster reported as follows: “The school roll remains fairly stationary round t.he 600 mark and the attendance is generally satisfactory. As the result of representations made to the Education Board, the- Department has agreed to the appointment of an additional assistant, for the second and third terms; the position will be advertised next month. I should be grateful if yon "would confirm my action in granting the use of the school to the Basketball Association for a meeting, as I understand the matter should have been referred to the committee. During the month the school was visited by the chairman and secretaiw of the Board, who happened to be in the district on other matiters. . I understand that several small repairs were authorised t 0 be done. As requested, I have inquired into the account sent by Mr Hagedorn and find that it is correct. I enclose an account! for 15s for chalk.”

W.E.A.: There was an encouraging attendanee at the meeting convened by Mr J. Watson at the State School last evening, for the purpose of rey.ving in. terest in the Workers’ Educational Association. The meeting, after Mr Wat. son had outlined the aims objects of the movement, decided to apply to headquarters at Wellington for affiliation and: t 0 obtain particulars, of available courses. The ernolment of mem. bers will take place next Thursday at a further meeting to be held in the State School.

Late Mr H. E. Holland: \ biographical sketch of the life °f the late Mr H. E. Holland was given over the air last evening by Mrs Fraser. The local branch of the Labour Party had a wireless set installed at: the rooms, and the address, was listened to with great interest.

Visit of Nelson Farmers: A number of members of the Nelson Jersey Breeders' Association arrived in Westport yesterday, and were shown over the Government and Cawth/rbn Institute plotb at Sergeant s Hill, and Fairdown. Mr Lemon, who is in charge of the development work, explained what had been accomplished and the visitors were much impressed with the progress made. The party is visiting DennLton and other country districts tV-day and to-night will be guests of the Buller Association at a social function to be held at the Elite Tea Rooms.

Buller Resident Passes at Takaka: The death ttook place at Takaka yesterday of Mr Richard Huddelttone, formetly a well-known and highly respected resident of Seddonville, Sergeant's Hill and Westport. ° The late Mr Huddlestone .retired from the Railway Department fifteen vears ago, and took up residence with liis daughter, Mrs Beattie, of Takaka. His wife died some years ago. He leaves four sons.,. James (Westport), William and Samuel (Christchurch), Jack (Stratford), also five daughters, Mrs G. Flight (Austialia), Mrs A W. Simpson (Westport), Mrs Beattie (Takaka), Mrs McNamara (bluntly) and Mrs S'lgley (Millerton). The body is to be brought to Westport for inter. nient.

Wedding—Scanlon —Button: A popular wedding took place at St. Canice’s Church, yesterday, when Noreen, daughter of Mr and Mr s Lut. ton Millerton, was married to Thomas, son of Mr and Mrs Janies Scanlon, Westport. The bride was attended by her neice, Miss Vera Jeffrey as bridesmaid', and Mr J. Scanlon, brother of the bride, groom, was best man. Rev. Father |Pnelan celebrated A uptial Mass. After the ceremony, a reception was held at the Elite Tea Rooms, the guests being received by Mrs Lutton, mother of the bride, and Mrs Scanlon, mother of the bridegroom.

B eU—Clewer: A pretty wedding took place a. bt. 'John’s Church, when Yuill, youngest son of Mrs and the late .Mr A. Bell, of Greymouth, and Winifred, second daughter of Mr and Mis W. viewer, of Westport, were joined: in the holy bonds of matrimony. „ . . , Rev. Canon Bl'oycc officiated and Mrs Chamberlain presided at the organ. . , , „ The bride, who was escorted by her brorfher-in-law, Mr J. McNallj, in t e unavoidable absence of her fattier, wore a model frock ot heavy oystei satin. The sleeves shirred on the shoulder gave a square effect and weiv tight-fitting to the wrists. The bodice was fitting to the waist, the high neck line being finished with three rows of plaited satin. The back was fastened with tiny satin buttons to the waist, from there flaring into a long tram. Th e , embroidered tulle veil was worn off the face with a coronet o f orange bios, soms. She carried an arm bouquet' ot white earnations and cyclamen. The bride was attended by her sister Thelma hs bridesmaid, who wore a frock of powder blue lace. The shou - ders were edged with frills of net an silver ribbon. The slimffitting skirt W a« finished with flared frills of net edged with silver. A cap of silver, with plaited' band of lame complied a dainty ensemble. Her arm bouquet was of shaded pink carnations and roses. Miss Williams, niece of the bridegroom, was flower girl and ° frock of pale apricot i.ifbla. in skirt was full from the waist line and of ankle length, rows of silver ribbon finishing the hem line. A reception was held at! the Elite Tea Rooms, the guests being re. ceived by the bride’s mother, who wore a blue floral frock with ' brown coat and hat and carried a bouquet of marigolds and abutilions. The bridegroom’s mothea' wore a floral frock under a brown marmot fur coat, with hat t 0 match. She carried a bouquet of shaded marigolds. Mr and Mrs Y. Bell left later for Wellington, the bride travelling in a brown costume, with, hat and aeces. series to tone. They will reside in Christchurch.

Late Mr W. B'eynon: The funeral of the late Mr W. Bey. non, who died at Nelson, took place to Waimangaroa Cemetery and was largely attended. The pall-bearers were Messr s O. Lunn, W. Kelly, H. Fayen and J. Jones, members of the local bowling club, a pastime of which deceased was an enthusiastic follower. An impressive Anglican service was conducted at the residence and at the ' graveside. A hymn, “Aberystwith,” in Welsh, was rendered by Mr Beynon, brother of the deceased/ bis wife, and Mr Silas Jenkins (West, po;fi*.). There were many floral tribtes. Personal: Mrs E. Potter left this morning for Chrisitehurch, on a visit to friends. Messrs J. Wilcox and L. T'red'nniek, wh 0 have been visiting Wellington in connection with the Industrial Confer enee, returned to Westport' on Wednesday.

Shipping: The Te Aroha sailed last evening for Little Wanganui. The Karepo, Poolta and Rata loads here on Monday. The Titoki is expected to-night from Greymouth.
