ST. COLUMBA CLUB
annual social There was a gathering of over fifty members and representatives of kindred organisations last evening at the rooms of St. Columba Club on the occasion of its annual social, the chair being occupied by Air J. P. Gilbert (president). A most enjoyable evening was spent by all present, in toast, song and story, reflecting every credit on the organisers. After the toast of “The Pope and the King”, that of St. Columba Club was proposed by Mr A. J. AlcDowull (United Club) who referred to the Club's manifold activities over a long period of years, of great value to the youth and forming an example for other clubs, including its work in establishing the Debating Clubs’ League. The chairman and Air I. Alcllroy responded, also Air W. B. Gilbert on behalf of the former members. “Kindred Clubs” was proposed by Air AL B. James, Alessrs AV. Green (Trinity Club), A. J. AleDowall (United Club), J. Beban (Alarist Football Club), D. O’Sullivan (Alarist Tennis Club), B. Rathbun (Alarist Cricket Club), C. Heaphy (Celtic Football Club), Al. Gough (Alarist Soccer Club) responding. The toast of “The Clergy and Alarist Brothers” proposed by Mr Al. Daly, was acknowledged by Very Rev. Father J. Long, Rev. Father J. Madden, Rev. Brothers Oswald and Anthony. Air AL Kelly proposed the “West Coast Debating League,” Air I. Alcllroy replying. The toast, of the Press was proposed by Air C. AleGinley and tliat of “The Artists” by Air T. Barry in very felicitous terms, Alessrs J. Duffy, J. Patterson, C. Leopold, W. Airns and D. AlcPherson responding, while Air AL B. James proposed “The Chairman” amid applause. Songs were given by Alessrs J'. Duffy “Father O’Flynn” and “’Alary”), C. Leopold (“Tavern Song” and “Lighterman Tom”), AV. Airns (“Lay My Head Beneath a Rose”, encored), and J. Gilbert (“For You Alone”, encored). Alessrs Duffy and Airns gave “The Battle Eve” as a duet. Air, P. Geddes gave a tap dance (encored). The accompanists were Alessrs Patterson and AlcPherson. Air Jack Beban recited “The Beefeaters”, Air Leopold related stories and the Camp Fire Band rendered several items, while community singing was also enjoyed, the gathering concluding with Auld Lang Syne.
