N.Z. FISH CANNING

Proposed Factory WILL SUPPLY BE DEPLETED ? WELLINGTON, October 19. AVhen approached to-day regarding the projected establishment of a fish canning factory on Cook .Strait, the Alinister of Alarine, Hon. P. Fraser, said that he had read this report with considerable interest. The Alinister sai ( d that, while this project might conceivably be an interesting industrial development, it should be cloarly understood there was one dange r which would have to be guarded against, and that was the depletion of the fish supplies. The people of New Zealand must have first call on the fish round' the New Zealand coasts, as fish formed an important food supply. The question of the export of fish must necessarily take second place. The Alinister added that, no doubt, any future trawling or fish packing entciqirises, if established, would probably have to ( .onfornt to the provisions of the Industrial Efficiency Bill, when that Bill became law, and would necessarily be fhe subject of close scrutiny.
