DENNISTON NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) Personal. Mrs. Slaven, of Burnett’s Face, is still a patient in the Buller Hospital. Her many friends will be pleneci to hear that she is making steady progress to recovery. Mr. Vic Smith, of Denniston, a well known cricketer and Rugby referee, has left the position of fitter with the Westport Coal Coy. and has accepted a similar position in Christo’’ irch. Mrs. Wearn, of Denniston, wife cf Mr Wearn, the new mine manager, was recently taken seriously ill and removed by ambulance to the Buller Hospital. Latest advice, the patient is progressing favourably. Constable W. Speuee, of Denniston, is leaving the Hill at an early date. Mr. J. C. Brown, of Westport, was a recent visitor to Deuniston. Mr Oscar Archer, of Denniston has left the district, having obtained a position in Canterbury. Mrs. J. Evans, has returned home from tho Buller Hospital where she underwent an operation. Mrs. Gospodretich, of Burnett’s Face, has returned home from Hospital, and is receiving treatment locally. Mines. The local mines last week worked the full time. Weather permitting there is every chauce of another full week. Additional employees have been engaged, so that the 40 hours week may be worked as smootaiy as possible. The power lines have been connected through to Granity and Millerton from the Denniston Power Station. Fire Brigade. Denniston Brigade are training for the Reefton Demo. On all occasions the times are good. The brigade held a bazaar for the purpose of raising funds. Unfortunately the weather was against the function. The boys deserved better luck. They wish to sincerely thank all who so ably assisted. The Band. The band’s social and forty-fives gatherings claim a good attendance, but there is a scarcity of bandsmen—4:> players. Mesdames Buchanan and Smith, with 9 games each, tied lor tbe ladies Ist prize. Of the men, Air. B. More.too was Ist with 9 games, and Mr. Kearnan 2nd with 8 games. Denniston Club. The half yearly meeting will be held on Wednesday evening, when the scretarv, Mr. J. B. Hudson, will read the financial statement. Owing to the resignation of Mr 0. Archer. Air. Mick Berry has been appointed chairman. Many new books have been obtained recently and the committee will do their best to obtain additional members. Miners’ Union Meeting.

Due to the resignation of Mr J. Longmuir (President), Mr. M. Clark (Vice-President) occupied the chair at t.he half yearly meeting of the Miners’ Union, which was only fairly attended. The Secretary. Mr. Smith, present id the balance sheet, many questions -were asked and satisfactorily answered. The balance sheet was accepted as correct. Many adverse comments were made concerning the outstanding debts to the Union, of men who are in the finacial position to pay and have on numerous occasions promised to do so, but have not made any attempt to fulfil their obligations. Air. T. Dellaway gave a report on the recent conference held in Westport, when Mr. O. Bishop was in atendance. The report was accepted. Correspondence from the National Sec.mtary re the Wellington Conference, also the Disputes Committee and the interpretation of the 10-honr week and other mutters of interest to neuibe.'s was listened to attentively Three non illations were put forward for ’he position of President: Messrs F. Nelv?n, C. Smith and J. Queen. A /'u’e in Hi; hull resulted in Air J. Queen being elected for the remaining six months of the year. Air. Tom Aluir, of Denniston. hits been elected as the Buller representative on the United Aline workers’ National Council. Numerous remits were put forward to be discussed by the Central Committee for the next wages agreement. A lengthy discussion took place re the sharing of work at the Power House and the 40 hour week. Weather. The storms at the week end caused much minor damage. At AVaimangaroa-. a house on the Cemetery Road owned by Air. I?. Lang, and occupied by Air. AV. Fleming, was struck by lightning and severely damaged Airs Fleming and her two-year-old son escaping. serious injury, which was most fortunate, considering the damage done to the room in which they were sitting. Hone Hoke Cricket Club. The club is bolding a concert and social, to bid farewell and good luck to two of their popular members, Messrs V. Smith and AV. Spence, who are leaving the district.
