HARIHARI NOTES

(Our Own Correspondent.) South Westland, like many other parts of the West Coast, experienced the heavy downpour which made itself known from Thursday evening until early on Saturday morning. Both the Big and Little Wanganui Rivers were running a banker on Friday evening, and many washouts occurred in the various parts of the district. No serious damage is reported. The mail arrived here as usual about 1 p.m. on Friday. Eager readers who arc in the habit of getting the “Argus” very regularly, were informed by the Postmaster that the Grey mail, which arrives on Friday morning at Hokitika, to connect with the service cars, had missed owing to some mishap through the floods, so “Argus” subscribers were content to wait until Monday morning for their next mail.

Mr Pullar, of Bruce Bay .school, who is believing at the local school, takes ii]) a position at the Christchurch East school, when a permanent teacher is appointed for this district. Another large mob of fat cattle passed through here, bound to the Addington market for Wednesday’s sale.

The wet weather has hampered the whitebait fishermen, and the catch so far this season has been very disappointing. The Plunkct Society intend holding a ball on October 23 to raise funds to help the Society along. Rev. Father Browne, Parish Priest, of Ross, will visit this part of his parish on Thursday and Friday, October 15 and 16.

Air C. Shearer, who is still a patient in the Westland Hospital, is making satisfactory progress. Air and' Mrs W. McLaren, of Kumara, spent the week-end in this district.

Mrs Mulvaney, one of the oldest settlers of the far south, is making good progress in the Westland Hospital.

Mr Gordon Elley, of Westport, is at present on the South Westland run, being employed by Gibbs Motors.
