LABOURER CONVICTED
ON CHARGE OF MISCHIEF. In the Magistrate's Court at Greymouth yesterday before Air. H. Aforgan, S.M., a plea of guilty was entered by Leo Alphonsus Young, aged 28 years, labourer, who was charged that on October 10, at Greynioiith, he wilfully damaged a pane of glass valued at 2/-, the property of Bahay Saraty, thereby committing mischief. Senior Sergeant E. Quayle, who ]iroscented, stated that accused arrived from Christchurch about a week ago, where he had been on sustenance. He had been living in a bach at. Cobden. On Saturday night, he went to the Police Station at 10.30 o’clock to get a lied and the police told him to see some friends. Accused had been, drinking. lie left the police station and went along to Aliss Saraty’s restaurant in Boundary street where he broke a window, stating that he wanted a bed. and he would not go away. Accused said that ho was waiting to go to Weheka in connection with a public works job. The Alagistrate: It looks as though yon went and deliberately broke this window so that the police would get you a bed? Accused: That is the way I look nt it.
The Alagistrate said that that sort, of thing could not be tolerated, a deliberate act in breaking ;i window so as he could get a bed. Accused would be fined £l, and ordered to pay the 2/- damage, in default three days imprisonment in the Greymouth prison. .Accused asked for time to pay.
The Magistrate said that provided accused was going to Weheka, he would allow him a fortnight in which to make payment. Otherwise, he would have to "take -it out.’’
