First Round of Championship BRITISH PLAYEko ~IN. (Per Press Association WELLINGTON, October 17. The New Zealand women’s golf championships commenced to-day. In the first’ round, Mrs Walker (Britain * had an easy victory over Miss Culling who has not been in her best form lately. The British player won the first four holes, and turned five up. Her only poor hole was the seventh, when Miss Culling lost, a chamce fic a win. Mrs Walker took the teni'h, and lost the eleventh, Rut won the next to be dormy. Miss Culling won the following hole, but that was the end. Miss Kay was out' in 38, and was one over fours for the rest otf het game agaiust Mrs Templer. Her play uas marked by brilliant recovery sec onds. Mrs McMillan was no match for th« British player, Mrs Greenlees, and her prospect was not enhanced, by obvious nervousness. Mrs Greenlees was playing perfect golf in her usual leisurely maiboer, and was getting extraordinary length, chipping up nicely, a id putting well. She was out in 37, made up of 5,5, 3,3, 3,5, 5,5, 3. At eve?} hole she had a win to the eighth, with the ninth halved. Miss Wade also went out in 37 to be five Up on Miss Petrie. Some excellent play was witnessed in the first bogey handicap tournament. The winner of the first division was Miss W. Barns Graham (2) with a card of two down. Mrs. Walker (Britain) plus one, was also two down, Miss Barns Graham winning on a count back. Mrs. Walker’s score was 74. The winner of the second division was Miss Buchanan, tlyee down.
