BULLER RUGBY

JUNIOR REP MATCH. BULLER DEFEATS COAST. WESTPORT August 12. Under beautiful weather and ground conditions. Buller and West Coast junior representatives played their , second fixture this season on Satur day, when they met on Victoria Square Westport. A fairly large attendance watched the game, which way interesting throughout' and at times was productive of really bright fooyiaJL When the sides met at G-reymouth, Coast won narrowly but on Saturday Buller not alone reversed ‘the decision but won decisively by 21 points to 12. The winners both in attack and defence w ere superior and only for -lapses in parsing amongst the backs, would have won by a bigger margin on points. Ferguson was not a reliable full-back and was shaded by Powick. The Coas f backs did not work together as well as the locals. Aiderton made amends for some early mistakes with a clever piece of work, which gave Douglas his try. Harvey gave a good account of himself at five-eight and was sound on defence. Adams was patchy. Kibble and Douglas, owing to the disappointing work of their inside men got few opportunities but dealt with anything that’ came their way in good style. Goodall at half, was a long wav behind Smythe who gave an outstanding display. Of the Coast forwards Key, Tainui and Hallinan were a bit better than the others, but all worked hard and there were no passengers. In the Buller pack Tiplady. Beck, Murphy and Mcßride were a'ways prominent The Buller backs all played well especially E. Brown, who was always where he was wanted. Powick at fullback, gave an all-round goo- 1 , display. Smythe, at half-back, was responsible hr clever work and his passing wa-well-timed and snappy. The opening stages of -the game were monopolised by the ' .forwards. Buller wer P the letter in the loose work. Mcßride opened the scoring by erossriny Coast’s line after a good movement by Bul.ler forwards. Powick added the points. A few minutes 'ater Buller forwards again took all before them and Reid following up fast, fell on -the ball for Bul.ler *s second try. Powick again converting. Ferguson effected a good save, taking the ball from the toes of the Buller forwards?, hut the home side continued to be :he much livlier an 1 the 4 backs produc’d some very pleasing patches of football. Smythe got his
