(Our Own Correspondent.) HOKITIKA, February 18. Despite a lookout along the beach, there has been no sign of the body of the late William Reed, who was drowned in the surf while bathing on Saturday evening. Mr E. Heenan, who was with the deceased when entering the water, stated that there was a strong current encountered, and he had to swim towards the south in this for some distance before being able to regain the shallower water. It waS then that he discovered Reid was missing.
The County Mining Executive has renewed the gold subsidy for the following prospectors: H. Surgeon, Rimu; F. A. Parker, Arahura; A. Muir, Arahura; D. Feeney, Blue Spur; J. Rochford, Kumara; H. E. Toohey, Blue Spur; J. T. Cooper, Blue Spur; J. Hewer, Harihari; L. J. Revell, Wataroa; 11. A. Parker, Goldsborough; S. G. Silk, Wataroa; S. A. Wright, South Hokitika; J.’ H. Hardy, South Hokitika; R. G. Walker, Kumara. When eligible the following are to be granted the subsidy: D. Cameron, Wataroa; K. A. Pullman, Hokitika Gorge; J. T. Kelly, Awatuna; J. A. Rawlings, Hau Hau, Blue Spur. S. Cropper and Party, Goldsborough, have been advised to work on the Humphreys Gully job. Subsidy was refused C. Cross and P. Webster for a tunnel on the wellknown Seddon’s Terrace field, and A McEwan, Weheka.
The death took place at Westland Hospital early this morning of Mr Charles Shearer Black, of Evans Creek, South Westland, a well-known settler. He was born at Mokihinui 55 years ago. He leaves a family of three daughters (Mrs J. Phibbs, of Greymouth; Mrs J. Weld, of Okarito; and Mrs 11. Reid, of Evans Creek), and seven sons, Fred (Hamilton), Charles. Robert, Hugh, Ronald, Edward, and Harry (all of South Westland). He is survived also by three brothers and two sisters in other parts of New Zealand. The funeral takes place to-mor-row (Tuesday) at Hokitika cemetery.
Professor R. A. Campbell, of Christchurch, consulting engineer, has been engaged by the Borough Council to formulate a new scheme for the delivery of water to the town from Lake Kanieri, relative to the pipe system between the lake and the reservoir. He arrives on Saturday.
The jellyfish invasion of coastal waters recently reported at Dunedin has made its presence felt locally. It is a tropical organism, known as the “Portuguese man-o’-war, ’’ and the sea is stated to be full of it off the coast. The ordinary timetable was to-day resumed at the Schools here.
At the Seven Mile excursion yesterday, Hokitika team won the life-sav ing competition from a Greymouth team. The winners were: R. Cooper, W. Craig, W. Sanders, M. Davidson, G. Delbridge, S. Diedrich, E. Heenan and B. Wyles. The West Coast championships are being held here on March 3, when teams from Westport and Greymouth will probably compete.
The County Council has recommended the Highways Board to accept the tender of G. E. Morris and party at £262 10s for the Black Creek during a road deviation on Lake Kanieri road Other tenderers were: J. Botua and party £270; and A. E. Gillanders and party £317.
There have already been about one hundred and twenty pi'es driven at Okarito harbour in the improvement scheme which is being carried out by an Auckland company. For the driv ing of two hundred more piles a contract is being now let. Last week was rainless, while the sunshine recorded was nearly 86 hour--
The Swimming and Surf Clubs are to-morrow night holding a novelty car njval at the municipal baths.
On Saturday the Rimu-Woodstock-Kanieri Women’s Institute members held an excursion and picnic at Grey mouth. An “express” competition was won by Mrs Inwood, Mrs O’Connor being second, and Mrs Wildbore winning the consolation. The “late train” competition resulted: Mrs Wildbore 1, Mrs P. Keenan 2, Mrs T. Wells consolation. Other events resulted as follows; Potato race, Mrs T. Wells 1, Mrs Wildbore 2; Counting Peas, Mrs W O’Connor 1, Mrs Olson 2; thre? legged race, Mrs J. Keenan and Mrs J. Kelly 1; ladies’ race, Mrs W. O’Conno: 1. Another competition resulted: Mrs Griffiths 1, Miss Elsie Stoop 2. The members were delighted to have Mrs Meade, of Runanga, and Mrs Oliver, of Greymouth, to afternoon tea, thanks being due to them for their assistance.
A return match between Seaview and Cobden Tennis Clubs, played at Sea view yesterday, was won by Seaview by 24 sets to 7.
At the County Mining Executive monthly meeting it was reported that in the past fortnight 21oz 16dwt llgr of gold had been won by prospectors. From the Unemployment Board was received a copy of an application for mining privileges in the Taipo area, asking if the Committee had any objection to this. The Committee recommended it. By the way, there i.s growing expectation of success in the Taipo region. The Board also sent copies of applications for seven prospecting licenses by R. Ross, area situated in reserve, South Hokitika, asking if Committee has any objection to granting of same. The Committee recommended them. The Board approved of a grant of 7s 6d per week for Johnston and Sanders; also to W. C Holley and A. Eastgate, youthful prospectors. 11. R. Baxter forwarded sample of clay obtained in the Taipo area,
stating it is now being tested by the Railway Department. The Committee decided to arrange tests. Mr James Rochford, Kumara, reported on likely localities for prospecting operations in Donegal Creek area.—Received with thanks, and the writer is to be asked to supply sketch plan of locality with a view to recommending prospecting operations by shafting, etc. A. A. Barron forwarded an explanation concerning gold won and sold, A copy is to be sent to certifying officers. R. and T. Wells explained an expenditure of £5, also work done prior to Christmas.—All extra work is to be reported promptly. S. Straight advised that he is now in position to carry on without further assistance, and thanking committee.for assistance already given. F. Schroder wrote relative to the appli cation by M. Johnson, asking that the grant not be made.
Kanieri Cricket Club has won the Southern Sub-Association’s senior eotn-i-.etition. Kanieri yesterday beat Ross. In the first innings the winners scored 71 (C. Morgan 18, E. Morris 12), Donaldson taking 7 for 20. Ross replied with 59 (Schofield 17, Donaldson'" 15, Adamson 11), Morgan taking 4 for 9. and C. Fleming 3 for 6. Kianieri scored 198 in their second innings (H. Wells 40, E. Pfahlert 36 not out, Morris 25. Owens 23, M. Woolhouse 23, W Wo-oi-
house 14 and S. Fleming 11). Donaldson took 3 for 27. Ross were left to make 210 to win, but were all out for 118 (Adamson 16, King 14, Conning 14 and Mitchell 22 not out). Webster took 6 for 24, including the hat-trick. Kanieri thus regained the Keller Cup.
