VANISHING WATERFOWL
At the close of the season for shooting of waterfowl in the United States of America, in December, “Nature Magazine" had an editorial on the licensed slaughter. “Cessation of the destruction of a vanishing race of wild creatures, however beautiful these may be, when their destruction involves the disbursing of millions of dollars each year, is too much for the Nature-lov-ers of the continent to expect,” the writer comments. “The selfish minority, the killers who spend this money, are in the saddle, and articulate. An apathetic majority, including millions who love wild creatures alive, and who expend each year infinitely larger sums just to see these wild things in their haunts, have not yet organized their mighty influence. When it is too late, and this time will not be long in coming, they will sadly regret their vanished opportunity.” The position in New Zealand is similar to that in the United States of America.
