The subject of India was raised at the Conservative Conference at Bristol by Sir Henry Page Croft with a resolution urging that while a gradual government within the provinces bo supported, the partnership of Britain. and Iri'dia in the central gov ernment of the Indian Empire must not be dissolved. The motion was defeated by 543 to 520 votes. This means that tho Gov(*rnmon,t of India White Paper policy only escaped defeat by 23 votes. Political passion ran high throughout the debate. Critics of tho Government demanded a secret ballot. The result was greeted with shouts of delight by the anti-Gocomment back-benchers, who regarded the figures ns a moral victory. The ‘‘Daily Express” expresses the opinion that the nearness of the voting threatens the future of the whole Government scheme of Indian reform. The motion was defeated, after a show of hands in favour of an amendment, w’hich recorded that ihp conerence last year decided it would not reach final conclusions on the subject until the Joint Select Comnrttee had reported.
