Department’s Reply TO MR. F. L. TURLEY. An. indication flint b'hc Health Department did nut i item! to hold an inquiry into the affairs of the Grey Hospital, was given air last even’ing’s mee'ting of the Greymouth Borough Council by Cr F. L. Turley, a member of the Hospital Board, who was the prime mover in seeking an inquiry following the terminat'i«iu by the Board of the agreement of two of its medical officers. The mat'!er came u[» fo ; - discussion when ('r C. Neville asked if the Council had any reply to the request fur an inquiry. The Mayor (Mr .1. W. Greenslade): No Cr Neville .said it was time thev had a reply now. Cr. J. S. Robertson; Have we got a balance sheet from the H-cspital BoardThe Alayor: Yes. The Alayor sa.id there should be something definite from the Health Department, and th** matter should pot have been .sidestepped all this time. The Council had had a reply from tihe department stating .that the. Hospital Board was 'co be given an opportunity to reply to Air Turley’s al-'.ega-tions. However be thought Hie Department should reply to the Borough Council’s request for an inquiry. Cr J. B. Kent said he though't the reply of He- Health Department was ;i legitimate one as it asked (•or the reason iha.t ithe Council wanted the inquiry. Cr F. B. Lawn asked about the proposed conference between the Borough Council and its representatives on the Hospital Board. The Alayor said he honed to see it eventuate next week. Cr Turley; I received a loiter, tonight,. from the Health Department saying there was going to Le no inquiry. That letter was the result of the Health Department, possibly from some mysterious letter which went 'to the Hospital Board, which I can’t get a copy of. Cr Kent sa'id that <’r Turley was at Hie Hospital Board meeting at which the Chairman’s letter was read, but he (Mr Turley) went away before the meeting concluded. Cr Turley said he had had to leave, the meeting at 9.3(1 p.m. and the letter had not been read while he was there. Cr Keni' said Hint if Cr Turley had re:ill\- l»een interested ‘in the Hospita Board, he could have heard the letter read. Cr Turley rose to a point of order. The Alayor: Cr Turley <• anulains ho has no access to a. le'tter sent to the Department in reply to his? Cr Titvley: Yes. that’s right. Tlio Mayor said that Cr Turley should have access to letters. ‘‘Any letters were available here.’’ h<‘ said. Cr Neville moved that 'the Health Department be written to asking for an immediate reply to tihe Council’s letter requesting an inquiry. Cr Turley seconded the resolution He asked Cr Neville to add 'to it. that it also be requested that statements made by the Cha'irma.n f the Hospital Board be made available. The Alayor said he did not know whether Hie Council could interfere with another body in such a way. Cr Turley: It is rather unfortunate that I can’t get a copy. Lt is a, bit late now. Cr Neville’s motion was carried.
