She crashed in landing after an atmospheric sounding flight. Pilot William McCormick suffered a broken left arm and body bruises, but his condition is not serious. There was a sudden blowing up of clouds which caused the pilot to shorten the flight. The pilot actually made a nice landing. Thereafter the plane, running a few feet, the left ski tripped over a ridge, and the plane turned over, causing the collapse of a wing, and pinning down Pilot McCormick’s arm. Fortunately, there was a crew working nearby. He was rushed to the camp on a sledge. Admiral Byrd was informed of the accident. He radioed to Pilot McCormick: ‘‘Don’t let the crash worry you! The only thing that counts is your safety. lam very sorry you have broken your arm. I hope it is not too painful, and will mend soon.”
