The area is now assuming quite a neat and tidy appearance, while the surroundings are being improved so thaj spectators will have ia. clear viVwof the competitions.

A bazaar is to be held on October 13 in aid of the funds of St. Patrick’s -School. Already great preparations are being made, and a good display of useful and ernamentai articles will bo exhibited. Such a worthy object is sure to have the whole-hearted support of the general public. At the Borough Council- meeting last, week, it was resolved that the Westliand Power Board be granted permission to bring light and power into the borough to supply those citizens who desire to have it installed. Iu moving this resolution, the Mayor said that many citizens were very anxious that the modern conveniences of electric, light should be available. He- felt' that the early negotiations (with the Westliand Power Board should be renewed. In factj it was the duty of the Council to endeavour to make electricity available to those people who want it. Cis J. Reedy and J. A. Peever spoke in support and other Councillors agreed. The monthly meeting of the State School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present: Messrs D. A. McLean (Chairman), J. Reedy, Ivor Steel, H. Hamer and T. W. Walker (Hon. Secretary). Mr Seebeck, Headmaster, was also present. Before commencing business, Mr Hamer feelingly expressed the Committee’s ccndolences to the Chairman and his family in their recent bereavftinent. Members stood in silence. The Headmaster reported that the attendance was still hampered by srekness among pupils; and that good work was being done by improving the paths and preparing the School garden. The V'est Coast School Committees 7 Association wrote in connection with a remi't by the local Committee, in educating the children to be careful of motor traffic. The Headmaster suggested that the Borough Council be asked to put up two signs warning motorists of the proximity to the school. He inlso stated that the refiesher course would be held this week for teachers, and reported that as the concert in aid of St. Patrick’s School would no*t be held, the teachers were arranging a novelty ent ertlainment early in December, when school drill, dancing and a general entertainment would be presented at a. concent to liquidate the small school debt. The visiting committee reported. The Secretary stated that application had been made to the Board for 50 yards of sheep proof fencing to protect the school gardens. The caretaker’s sa.ary was passed for payment. Daylight saving wfis ushered in by a severe storm of wind and rain, which passed over Kumara on Sunday night, minor damage being done to*chimneys, fences and trees.
