MAGGIE

(Victim of inadvertent poisoning at Blackball). Not while the breath of life remains, Or one drop of blood leaps in my veins, Shall I forget thee, lovely one Too soon, too soon, thy sands have run! Oh, Maggie dear, thou wert my pride, My love, my hope at eventide; Too sweet, too bright, too good to stay: An Angel e’er thou passed away! Dear lovely soul in peaceful rest, There is a blank within my breast That surely will remain with me Until the hour I rest with thee. In all sincerity and truth, Thou wert the queen of joyous youth — So young and fair, so fond and free— Oh, would that I had died for thee! I’ll miss thy voice, so soft and sweet, Thy merry laugh, thy form so neat, Thy artless smiles, thy sweet, kind face Thy winning ways and matchless grace.
