FARMERS UNION
TAXATION AND RATING PROBLEMS Resolutions to Government v l’' r Press Association). GISBORNE, June 7. i Probably the most important meeting of farmers seen in Gisborne, assembled this afternoon to discuss the question of taxation and rating. The meeting was called by the Poverty Bay Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, and between sixty and seventy were present, including representatives of Cook, Waikoliu. Opotiki, Whakatane, Uawa, IWaiapu. Matakaoa and Wairoa County Councils. I In the course of a lengthy meeting i the opinion was unanimous that the position of farmers, so far as payIment for sales was concerned, was desperate, and that users of petrol should pay the cost of road maintenance. The following resolutions were passed and are to be forwarded to the .Government: (1) That tho cost of hospitals be a charge on the Consolidated Fund; (2) that all existing county special and separate rates be a charge on all Highways Boards’ funds, until each loan is liquidated, and that no further special road rating areas be permitted; (3) that the powers of the Highways Board be extended to, (a) to tender for delivery of motor spirit each year, (b) to make tax required for reading purposes and adjust quota between town and country, (c) to apply all motor taxation to roads and bridges.
