EMPIRE TRADE
NEW FORMULA By Canada and Australia (Aus,‘ and N.Z. Cable Assn.) OTTAWA, December 13. 11) the next trade agreement between Australia and Canada, a formula is in view upon which a comprihensive- scheme of intcr-Empire trade preferences may be based, according , to a. statement to-day made by Mr j Stevens and Mr Parker Maloney. Addressing the Board of Trade at a luncheon in honour of Maloney, Mr Stevens said: “I believe this will be the forerunner of a series of agreements which will achieve what we have failed to achieve at the Imperial Conference. One thought is uppermost: How can we so direct our trade so that we can buy more goods from Australia? We believe we are close to a. formula which will succeed in that purpose.” Mr Parker Maloney said: *‘ If we are now getting from outside of the Empire anything which we can get from Canada, we feel that we should get it from you.’’ Their previous trade agreement, he said, had not worked very satisfactorily either for Canada or for Australia. There should be nothing to stand in the way of a new agreement, which should. be mutually advantageous. Mr Maloney corrected a report attributing to him the statement that Australia provided excellent opportunities for immigrants. At present, lie said, migration was being discouraged. Immigrants would not be desired until the depression had passed. and the problems in the way of land settlement here solved. ST. JOHNS (New Brunswick), December 12. The Premier.
