PATRIOTISM v. EFFICIENCY. WELLINGTON, August 7. A controversy has been raging for some time over the City Council s proposal to procure a heavy roller tor paving work from America. The Municipal Engineer found the British article deficient in several respects, and was inclined to corrugate pavement. In consequence of opposition on patriotic grounds, the matter was held in suspense while the British tenderers cabled Home, asking for alterations in'the mach.nes. I his the mauu facturers have declined to agree to, refusing to depart from their own standards, and as they refuse to make any alterations, the order will go to America.
DUTY ON A DREDGE. GISBORNE, August 7. When the Harbour Board’s new dredge came from Australia certain part s of the machinery had been dismantled, and sent over by anothei vessel. The Customs Department refused to remit the duty, which was paid, but the Board is now advised that it will be reimbursed. BANK RATE REDUCED IN ENGLAND. LONDON, August G. The Bank of England discount rate has been reduced to 41 per cent. The reduction of the bank rate was due to the satisfactory gold position; and was very unexpected, Stock Exchange and markets all round are improving,
