CORRESPONDENCE
COBDEN HOSPITAL BOARD APPOINTMENT.
(To the Editor)
Sir—As the above subject is a burning one in the little township on this side of the river, I wish, through the medium of your columns, to throw a little light on the matter. At the attempt to do something that the Board attemp to do something that the Board had no power to do, has apparently not satisfied the Board, or, at least, a majority of the present members of the Board. No doubt they were disappointed at the straightforwardness of two members of the Board who attended the meeting, and who wanted to do the correct thing, and appoint Mr Turley to the vacancy on the Hospital Board. .It is well-known that such vacancy is customarily filled by the appointment of the next on the list of candidates at the last preceding election, but, on this occasion, it apparently does not suit three members out of a Board cf seven to adopt this customary attitude, and while the Board is short of two members, leaving only five at present on the Board, ’ an attempt is being made to fill the vacancy; and I believe, this attitude is one that can only meet with condemnation at the hands of fair-minded people, whatever their political opinions may be, because, after all, intrigue and a deliberate policy of “spoils to the victor’’ do not lead to a high moral standard of public efficiency. I would like to ask Mr Gunn, the Chairman of the Board, why the haste, for a special meeting of the Board to deal with this matter, when only one week later the opinion of the electors can be had? It is generally understood and desired, that Mr F. Turley will stand for the Town Board, and, if elected, his election should indicate to the Board who should be appointed to the Hospital Board vacancy. If as stated by Mr Pullen mid Mr Barrett, they desire the opinion of the electors, then surely the special meeting called for next Wednesday is not all fairly and squareely above board, when, only a week later, the new Board will be appointed, or, at least, the two vacancies filled, a.id then a full Board could deal with the llos pital Board vacancy. In conclusion, Mr Editor, I would just like to say, that, being one of those who have been approached by a certain people to offer their service.-., I must refuse to do, on account ot the underhand work going 0.1 in our little township, and, while I hold no brief for Mr Turley in politics, I would not allow myself to be used in the manner indicated. I regret, for certain reasons, it is not advisable to publish my name, but I only wish to say that. I believe in British fair play, even to my opponents. I am, etc., BRITISHER.
