WESTLAND NEEDS

VOTE FOR DUNGANVILLE ROAD (Special to the Argus.) WELLINGTON, June 30. Regarding Dungauville Road, there have been representations made by the Grey County Council and by Mr Jas. O’Brien, M.P., to the Minister of Mines. The Minister has authorised a sum of £4OO for the repair of the MarsdenDunganville Road. COAST FARMERS’ NEEDS. DRAINAGE AND LIME. WELLINGTON, June 30. The Member for Westland, Mr Jas. O’Brien, to-day brought two farming matters before the Minister of Lands. One was a request for the draining at Kokatahi of three farms, belonging to soldiers. The other request was for a grant of £5OO as a subsidy for the co-operat-ive lime works at Ross. Mr O’Brien held that the soldiers on these farms could not make good unless their land was drained for them and by draining it, the Crown would make sure that the equity was there to meet the money advanced to the soldiers. In regard to the lime works, Mr J. O Brien said that these works were not being run for profit. They were only kept going by the enthusiasm of those who recognised the value of lime, as applied to West Coast lands. The Minister of Lands, in reply, said that he would have enquiries made into the soldiers’ request for drainage, and would go into the matter thoroughly, giving his reply at a later date. In regard to the lime works, he said he thought it was a matter for the Agricultural Department; but he would see what could be done.
