SOCCER FOOTBALL
The soccer season on the Coast is now well under way, and the four teams in the senior competition, Greymouth, Rewan Jnited, Reef ton and Blackball —have each played two games. The results so far indicate that there is very little between the clubs, and a keen struggle for the Cup and medals •is bound to eventuate. The state of the competition at present is as follows:—
Reefton so far have been the unlucky eleven, having lost by the odd goal in each game, when the run of the plav fully warranted a. draw. The inability of Runanga to field a team, robs the competition of quite a lot of interest. Only three or four of last seasons’ eleven were available, the ji’est having left the district, and with no new material offering, the Runanga Club decided that it was inadvisable to place a weak team in the field. Richmond, Kinsey, Clark and Winstanley have thrown in their lot with Grcy, mouth and have considerably strengthened the town team. Barnes and Haggerty are with Rewanui United, and a change in the fortunes of the Jatter Club would be welcomed by all Soccer supporters. They have commenced the season in good style, and can be depended upon to battle hard to gain the honours. The Reef ton Club have made great progress since, last season, from a playing point of view, and as the team and its supporters are real enthusiasts, and put plenty of life and vim into their matches, they are a decided acquisition to the competition, and will give some of the old- r clubs an unpleasant surprise or two before the competition closes. In the two games against Rexvan "i ai*d Blackball, both teams had their xxoik cut out to prevent Reefton from making a draxv of it. Greymouth, on paper appears to have a very strong team, but in both their games so far, were counted somewhat lucky to effect a draxv, which only goes to prove that the team that wins the medals will have to put their best foot forward, and leave nothing to chance. Blackball, as usual, can place a strong team in the field, and have plentv ,»f material available in case of necrssitv. With this in their fax’our, thev ought to bo found somewhere near the top xx hen the season closes. A large influx of Britishers from overseas to Blackball ensures the Blackball Club plenty of support, and this season a record number of members have been curdled. i he next round to be played on Max* 10. xvill result in txvo stubbornly contested games,. Rexvanui Unit *d and Blackball xvill battle for supremacy at Dunollie. and Greymouth and Reeftoii xvill provide a very interesting struggle at Grey mouth. I here are three teams in the junior competition—Grey. Runanga and Blackball. Technical have xvithdraxvn their team fro~n this grade, oxving to unfavourable age and weight conditions and will probably be found operating in a
more suitable grade. The school competition is in the capable hands of Messrs Airey. and Sharp, and Brothers Leonard and Howard, who can be relied upon to get things moving energetically The Westland Centre are endeavouring to secure a visit from a Buller rep team for June 3, and the Canterbury and Wellington Centres are also being approached to send rep. teames to the lhe Committee of Management hav also decided to make soundings, with a \iew to arranging suitable rep. games for both the junior and juvenile grades.
