LEAGUE FOOTBALL
LEAGUE NOTES. (By “Sideline.”) Given fine weather, this week-end should see some very keen games fought out in the various grades. Patrons of the Rugby League are being well catered for, as no fewer -than twelve games are to be played. The schools competition commences ion Saturday. Some very pretty firnball was witnessed in this grade last | season. It behoves the Centro to help ( and encourage the boys in every posI Sible way, for it is from these' same ‘ ...ds that our future champions must !• come. I would like to point out to certain supporters of th a code that refercemg from the side-line is i( very simple Illa t° ter. (live the referee a fair go boys, I and aTwa.ys remember that he is doing tils best, and has the interest oi the game at heart equally as much as you have, if nut. more so 1 A referee cam always justify h: s actions m any game he referees, and if your ruling does not agree with his, have a quiet talk to him after-the match. That will save you shouting out your opinions to the public in general. Rememljer we are alf supporting t he game because we have its interests at heart. llio Marists have lost one of the,, vanguard in it.| io pe ,. s<m o{ , , )ul)( . O'Neill who has been transferred I Dunedin, on promotion. All support I ers of .he game wish LaurV every sue 1 cess and hope to hear of him plaving for the code in the southern city. Runanga have unearthed the makings of a very good player in U al -, n Hands. This young plaver lias weight and pace, and is also Uj>e posses-or <it a splendid “boot.” His goal from near the half-way mark last Sunday -J h . match against .Unrest being a real g< m, and well worthy of a senior pi.rver. This young player has to keep on training to get to the top. Speaking to an onio< ker of tin Ihird Grade match between Marist and the Creek I was informed that th,match was ai clinker from start, to f:nish and that the Green boys won the match on sheer drCy-rmination. BLACKBALL v. ROA. Ail roads led to Plar-l-bon ;„ 5 . s „ n . day, and n record crowd gathered to witness .-, D.st, clean game. T‘ w-> an i"e:il day for football, and the ground was in g„„,| „ r , lpr Blackball backs were th" deciding factor, their l::ind- . lmg being first-class, compared with the uncertain movements of their opponents: but the Roa forwards had i Parsonage and Co. fully extended. The . Blackball captain. Dodds, is a Lorn footbailor, and, as first five-eighth, was in every promising movement. McCr-l:c. playing off him. made some beautiful openings f. r White, who played his Lost game to date, and is evidentbsuited Ly his new position ns centre three-quarter. Haisty and I.eiteh. on the wings, made the most of their opportunities. and Loth tackle well. Kinsella. the half-back, played a heady game, and is one of the most pror-is-ing boys Blackball has had for some time. Perrie. a very cool player, did ail that was required of him nt full back. The home forwards al 1 fl ved well, with Harry T.ong. Rodgers an-1 Bell the shining lights. For Roa. Smith in the full-back p" sition, was good, and worthy of a place in any senior team. I ie wings i Hodgson and Taylor, were weak, nei- ; iher being able to grasp th" opportunities offered. Buist and Clark played | well, but often lost ground by failing : to run straight. Quinn was the mainI stav of the backs, before being uneckI cd hors-de-eomb.at. while Kells at half played his usual game. Hansen was the c outstanding forward on tho field, and was ably assisted by Skinner and Dondo. Air T. Todd made an efficient r-’fer
