WEST COAST APPOIN'I .\IE.\Tb. CIIRLSTCHLRGH, April 17. At the meeting of the Canterbury Education Board to-day the. following West Coast appointments were recommended :— Aliss Al. E. Phelan, assi-taut teacher at Greymouth. AU'. D. C. Williamson, mss.istant master at Hokitika. Miss i). Al. Lynn, sccundar'. a.-sisi-ant at Hokitika. Miss H. Donncllaii, Assistant Afisi tress at Runanga. -Mis s I). M. Glasson, Sole Tacher al Moonlight. W ESI' COAST S( HOOL AGRrfTLTI RE, PRIZES. A report was received from the judges with regard to the Shield Competition carried out on the West Coast t luring the \ ear 1921-25. The awards are follows:—Ngahere School, Isi 139 points: Cobden, 2nd, 3/2 points; Ross, 3rd, 360 points; Paroa, Jtfg 358 points. It was lecommemlcd that the usual money prizes be allotted. t () be spent on agricultural requisites, and ihirt a congratulatory letter be sent to each ol the successful schools. TEACHERS AN I) SPORTS. A letter was received from the Hokitika. Committee urging that instruction in swimming should be given more prominence in the syllabus, and that teachers should be required to take a more active part in sjxirts. It was resolved to reply that ii was already part of the teachers’ duty to take an active interest in the games of the pupils, but that the Board t while iu sympathy with the Committee’s proposal, could not agree to the suggestion that swimming should be made a compulsory subject, there being various difficulties that would jii’evcnt this being put into effect.. GREY TECHNICAL SCHOOL. A letter was received from the Director of the Greymouth Technical High School re the upkeep of the manual buildings at Greymouth n-nd Hokitika.. It was agreed to inform li)m that the Board undertakes to attend to the upkeep of the buildings and that- all necessary repairs etc., will be undertaken on the recommendation of Board’s foreman on the Coast. SCHOOL REPAIRS. An application was received from the Greymouth committee for the painting the white walls dado heightand as the foreman had recommended that this bo done, it was resolved to grant the request. Taylorville Committee applied for (1) attention to foundation ot the building; (2) the addition of ten feet tu tho main building and the remodelling of same; (3) attention to the out office; and the- removal of same to another position, as recommended l>y the Inspector Irwin. A report was also received from the foreman recommend-ng (1) renewal of piles and plates, (2) renewal of porches on north side, (3) the renewal ot barges, cover boards, etc, and the painting of the outside of the building (4) the"demolition of a< room and that a new porch be built on the south side with a master’s room at one end and a small store at the other, (3) the removal of windows on the south side to the north side, the movable partition to be made a fixture. It was resolved that the application for remodelling be placed on the Board’s list of urgent works fop the current fiancial year. Woodstock Committee’s application for tho following requirements at the school was referred to the Foreman for a report:—(l) supply of sand for the floor of the shelter shed in place of boards, (2) th© erection of strong fences at th© rear of the school to prevent wandering stock from gaining access, "(3) attention to the front gates, and (4) repairs to portion of the main budding.
